Overview

Kids who are failing at school constantly use excuses. Parents and teachers often try tutoring, force, or logic to try to get these underachievers to perform at a higher level. A noted psychologist whose ideas have received media coverage reveals his dynamic method and tips for parents and teachers which have motivated over 2,000 failing students to perform at or near their full potential.

Empowering Underachievers is written for parents, educators and anyone else who wants to be a catalyst for changing an underachiever. This book is written to enhance your understanding and effectiveness when dealing with your unmotivated student. Dr. Spevak provides examples from actual clients so that you can increase your knowledge, gain reassurance, and apply the information. There is practical advice regarding what to do, but there is also enough theory so that you can understand the problem and use the information to generalize to the many different situations you will encounter. As individuals, each underachiever is unique, but after more than 20 years experience with student motivation, Dr. Spevak recognizes the categories, similarities and patterns they present. Motivation is complicated. You have probably tried many logical approaches that have not worked. The situation is not hopeless. There are things you can do to improve motivation. That's what this book is about.

Empowering Underachievers is just that: empowering them. That is the key to their change. Their internal motivation must be empowered so that they ultimately take charge. However, they need the insight and emotional tools to get the job done. That is where you can help. You can be the spark that ignites the flame. That is what empowerment is all about.

    Where has this book been?

My 15 year old son has been unmotivated both at school and home for a couple years. We've tried everything: taking stuff away, punishing, lecturing, assisting, tutoring and on and on. Nothing seems to work( we've read a lot of books too...). Empowering Underachievers describes my son to a 'T.' More importantly, about half the book is 'doable' suggestions that WORK! Thanks for the book and the great suggestions to get my son to SELF motivate. I just wish we had found this book a couple years ago. Great read and really useful. It's too bad we aren't living in the WDC area to go to the Center.

    Empowering Underachieves

Wonderful reading, It's about time someone explained why all the other motivation approaches didn't work, I tried everything I could think off to help motivate my child, nothing worked. Now I know why, I was focusing on the wrong concerns. Empowering Underachieves gave me new insights and tools. I strongly recommend this book.
