Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In a time when "chick lit" reins supreme on adult and children's bestseller lists, girls (and guys!) would be lucky to stumble upon one of the "Kiki Strike" novels. This second novel in Miller's series has it all—daring adventures, friendships at risk, animal rights abuses, and young girls with big dreams and even bigger brains. Strike is the leader of a band of fourteen-year-old girls who call themselves the Irregulars. They rule the Shadow City, a tunnel network underneath New York City where crime used to be rampant. With their special gadgetry, which they invent themselves, they are able to keep tabs on NYC's evil-doers, and, in this second title, they try to keep the group together as parents and police try to tear them apart. The only hiccup is the girls' age. While this series is meant to be a wittier Nancy Drew for the 21st century, their age makes their adventures seem bizarrely unbelievable rather than just slightly unbelievable. However, their youth does keep Miller from having to go in-depth with some teenage issues, such as significant others that often prevent many young adult protagonists from having lives of their own. In addition to her artful writing style and brisk narrative, Miller also does an excellent job of reeling in newcomers to the series. Anyone who has not experienced Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City will still be able to follow the story line here and undoubtedly will make a run to get the first novel once he/she is done. Luckily, the series does not end here and there will be more Irregular adventures to follow, hopefully with more kung-fu, more disguises, more inventions, and more girl power included. Gr 5-8
The enigmatic Kiki Strike, introduced in Inside the Shadow City (Bloomsbury, 2006) is back, as is her diverse group of girlfriends known as the Irregulars. This time the focus is on Oona and the secrets of her past that place all of the Irregulars in danger. Ananka narrates and again must deal with her parents becoming suspicious about her extracurricular activities. Abandoned as a baby and raised by women from her father's sweatshop, Oona is contacted by her dad, an infamous smuggler and leader of the Fu-Tsang gang, who reaches out to her in an effort to placate the ghost of her dead mother. Under the guise of making up for lost time, Lester Liu presents Oona with expensive gifts and seeks her help in designing a museum installation for his newly acquired Chinese empress mummy. Despite his kind overtures, the Irregulars suspect Liu's motives and worry that Oona is being won over to the dark side. The girls learn that there is a plot to smuggle priceless art out of the museum, but they can't determine if Oona is in on the scheme or is playing double agent. As numerous secrets are uncovered, the girls are not sure who they can trust. The latest tale about these friends is just as thrilling and as much fun as the first. A well-paced plot keeps the momentum while unexpected surprises help round out many of the characters introduced in the first adventure. Ananka again provides would-be sleuths with important advice as she offers detailed instructions such as "How to Take Advantage of the Power of Scent" and "How to Know if Your House is Haunted." A must-have for libraries where the first book is popular and a recommended purchase for collections that could use a goodghost/spy/action/mystery/story.

Kirkus Reviews
The return of Kiki Strike and the Irregulars has the girls tackling an intricate series of seemingly unconnected mysteries that would baffle average teens. Ananka Fishbein narrates their adventure as the New York City friends venture underground to the Shadow City, but only for a brief visit. More pressing problems are afoot. Oona's father, Lester Liu, wants to end his gangster ways and become legit. Oona is thrilled to connect with her father, but other Irregulars view her joy as betrayal and it threatens to drive a wedge in the girls' camaraderie. Miller stirs up a wicked brew of Taiwanese illegal immigrants, Russian criminals, stolen artwork, a hottie guy prowling the park, angry squirrels, a haunted Victorian mansion and the mummified corpse of an ancient Chinese empress. Leave it to the can-do girls to dig deep for the common denominator to this mix and solve the puzzle. These characters are sassy, spirited and smart, and their adventures will appeal to young readers cut from the same mold. (Fiction. 11-14)

Get ready for the next adventure... The Irregulars have returned! On the agenda this time around are the following things:

Finish mapping the Shadow City. Since Livia and Sidonia Galatzina, (supposed) Queen and Princess of Pokrovia, and Kiki's mortal enemies, managed to get an incomplete copy of their map, it's more important than ever that The Irregulars finish what they started.

Stop Lester Liu. He got away last time, and they aren't about to let that happen again. But when Oona seems to throw herself in the middle of the whole thing, no one is sure what to do or who to believe.

Keep Ananka in New York. Ever since Ananka joined The Irregulars, her grades have been plummeting. Now her mom wants to send her to a boarding school on some farm.

Find the squirrels. Trained squirrels are attacking people, and someone is painting life-size pictures of them all over the city. And he seems to know who The Irregulars are.

And those things are just the beginning. This is a book of secrets, and misunderstandings, and sneaky dealings. No one is quite what they seem, not even the people you might think you know. And you can't be too careful about who you trust, or who you don't.

I admit that I had a moment, a split second of concern about this book. I loved the first one (INSIDE THE SHADOW CITY) so much, and second books are historically a letdown even when they're good. After the first page, I was thrilled to admit I was completely wrong to doubt. By the end, I was groveling at Kirsten Miller's feet!

Strong memorable characters, well-written, fast paced, exciting, touching, hilarious... And, of course, indispensable information like how to appear mysterious, how to know if your house is haunted, how to take advantage of the power of scent, and much, much more.

You absolutely must read this book. Trust me.
