In this book, Devin narrates his and his fellow paramedic stories in an honest and mostly humorous demeanor. Captivating scenes of not only blood and gore, but of stupidity and borderline insanity. For instance, he was supposed to be transporting an elderly citizen from the hospital to a nursing home- a rather minor task- but when he walked into the hospital room, I don't think he was expecting to see an old woman standing on her bed striping and swinging her diaper around... There are many stories even more surprising than that in this book too. I would recommend it not just for those looking into EMS work but to anyone who wants a good chuckle too. Originally, I chose to read this particular book for an ethnography project in English, but once I started, I could not put down this book! In relation to my ethnography project, this book gave a different insight to a job I thought to either be very intense all the time, or just a very dull job. Obviously, Devin uses humor to cope in any given situation. For instance, he explained himself that in the presence of death and grief, it's important to find some comedy and reflect back and laugh upon. This helps with my ethnography project by illustrating how paramedics and first responders deal with the emotional repercussions of their jobs.
This book portrays every aspect of work that an EMT has to deal with but in a very humorous way. Highly recommended for everyone who is either in EMS or wants to know more about EMS and see what an EMTs job is all about. Its NOT all "Blood, Guts, and Gore"
I had originally gotten this book for a paper that I was writing, but when I sat down and started to read it, I realized...Oh my Goodness...I say/think that all the time!!! I could even picture myself in every scene that he painted, and imagine myself doing the tasks. The author of the book happens to do the same job as me in the same places, however we have never met, maybe all EMT's just think the same way. I have never laughed harder in my life when reading! This book is Definitely a great book for anyone! Young or old, EMT or not this book gives a great look into other peoples jobs and lives! (same thing for his 2nd book too!)
I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Devin is a great friend and miss talking to him and this gave a chance to reconnect with him. I truly enjoyed this book.
What the author wrote down is very true not only contextually, but also about how EMS personnel treat life at times. EMS personnel seem insensitive at times, especially at accidents and death. They are not. One of the only ways some of EMS personnel relieves stress and pressures of the job was to laugh at themselves. But it makes my day because of the fact that some of those 'hilarious' items have happened to some of my coworkers or myself. Don't get me wrong. EMTs care and are empathetic. At times it may seem that EMS is our life, because sometimes, we may never leave our job for days at a time. Other times, it may seem like we have a life outside of EMS, because we may have a few days off. We are at the core of our being are EMT through and through. We may bleed like everyone else, but we also bleed EMS. It made my day when I read the book and I would recommend this read to any of my friends or family who wonder what EMS is all about or who are in EMS
this is an excellent book to read if your considering a career in medicine. even if you are not it is still and excellent book to read.
Welcome to the amazing world of EMS! Devin tells the stories that nobody believes, but all EMTs have gone through. If you are in the business, you will be laughing at the stories. If you're not in the business, trust me, this stuff isn't made up. Ficition couldn't be this strange.
