Packed with outstanding full-color, clinical photos and illustrations, the fourth edition of this comprehensive text focuses on why you take certain actions in the field, as well as how. It provides thorough, yet practical coverage of the National Standard Curriculum (NSC) for the EMT-Basic, the new National Education Standards, and the National Registry of EMTs National EMS Practice Analysis. This comprehensive approach helps you better understand the process of disease progression and your role in prehospital patient care.
  • Clinically comprehensive text promotes critical thinking by providing information on why as well as how, going beyond NSC objectives and the new National Education Standards.
  • Nearly 1,000 full-color illustrations and photographs complement the text and provide visual reinforcement of anatomy and physiology, procedures, and equipment.
  • Key Terms are defined within each chapter, so you can concentrate on the topic covered rather than frequently looking up unfamiliar terminology.
  • Review Questions with answers at the end of every chapter give you immediate feedback on your progress.
  • Chapter-opening scenarios, Case-in-Point boxes, and The Bottom Line sections promote critical thinking and encourage you to apply key concepts.
  • Evolve Learning Resources include anatomy challenges, a body spectrum electronic coloring book, chapter checklists, an English-Spanish audio glossary, learning objectives, lung sounds, PowerPoint lecture notes, web links, and links to NREMT skill sheets.
  • New chapter on Abuse and Assault, plus a totally revised chapter on Patient Assessment that aligns with the new National Education Standards.
  • Case-in-Point boxes feature real-life case studies that challenge you to apply related concepts covered in the chapter.
  • Real World boxes highlight important issues involving geriatric and pediatric patients, cultural considerations, and on-scene information.
  • Extended Transport boxes address the needs of rural EMTs by highlighting necessary information for long transports.
  • More than 150 new photographs and clear, easy-to-read text make this edition clinically relevant, interesting to read, and easy to comprehend.
  • A companion DVD includes video skills and medical animations.

An excellent introduction to all this EMT craziness!!!!

If you're thinking about jumping into the whole EMT thing, then this book is an excellent place to start. The book itself may seem daunting in size, but it's actually broken up into small and medium-sized chapters that make for easy mental digestion. I bought the book several months before beginning my first EMT class, and its simplicity and clarity made it an easy read, while still retaining all the vital information. Nothing in this book is just for rocket scientists; it's a book for everyone interested in becoming an EMT. Be warned however, that this book will never be perfect, and you will find some typos, and even a few wrong answers in the question/answer sections at the end of every chapter. (Relax, it's just one or two answers in the entire book.) But as a true introductory text, this book can't be beat. It provides you with all the details of the work, and HOW and WHY EMT's do things the way they do. Perhaps 40% theory and 60% practice, the book weaves the two together so that you can SEE what's going on inside the person you're treating, and you come to visualize the patient on many different levels. (Again, relax. I don't mean to get esoteric here, but understanding the disease or trauma that CAUSES the symptoms is 10 times better than just treating the symptoms themselves, and this book begins to get EMT's to think about causes as well as just treating the obvious.) I highly recommend this text, as a textbook for an EMT class, or as something to read prior to studying an EMT course with a teacher who uses another book. As I've said, its simplicity and clarity are its biggest assets, and you feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of each chapter when you say to yourself 'I understood ALL of that!'
