From Barnes & NobleIn a time when too many books about relationships rely on gimmicks and stringent rules or don't go beyond merely finding a partner, it's refreshing to read a book that goes deeper than the surface level of "how-to" books to provide an original and eloquent revisioning of intimate relationships. "True romance is not a situation so much as it is a realm of being, a realm unlike any other, permeating the air around us yet oddly invisible.... It answers our spiritual as well as our emotional cravings," writes spiritual teacher and author Marianne Williamson in her latest book, Enchanted Love. The author of the No. 1 bestsellers A Return to Love, A Woman's Worth, and Illuminata now writes her most convincing book yet, this time about the next level of understanding love and the people we love. It's a big topic, and she more than meets the challenge.
In her trademark direct prose, Williamson provides a powerful new look at the way we perceive partnerships. "So often the issue is not learning how to attract love, but rather, how to recognize love," according to Williamson. Romantic love, she describes, is the newest spiritual frontier, and spirituality is the next phase in the relationship frontier. Reconnecting with the inherent romantic enchantment within each of us in a romantic way is "nothing less than an assignment from God." Along the way, she shows the reader how to go beyond such experiences as blame, guilt, and temptation. She argues that forgiveness is the key to commitment, that we need to stay away from reacting to our beloved's actions in a judgmental or defensive way, but that we also need not be naive in the way we deal with them. This allows each person in the relationship to maintain boundaries, standards, and principles. Other topics she deftly covers include true partnership, how to go beyond past relationships, grief, spiritual sex and love, marriage, and monogamy.
By avoiding the tired language of pop psychology, Williamson is able to explore the ideas of the sacredness of love in an encouraging, helpful tone. Through parables, personal reflections, and references to classic myths and legends of lore, Williamson paints a map toward higher understanding and deeper experience of the union of two souls. "Mystical love, like mystical anything, exists in a different realm of consciousness than the one that dominates our daily lives," writes Williamson. Perhaps most touching are the prayers that are sprinkled throughout the book, tools to help the reader put the words of this book into immediate action.
After five previous books and more than 15 years of teaching, Marianne Williamson has not lost her touch and continues to lead us to the cutting edge of spiritual living.
