Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
If Magdalena Kozená is one of the current "It girls" of the opera world, it's worth noting that she hasn't taken an obvious path to the top. This timely sampler from the mezzo-soprano's albums is a reminder of how much she's accomplished in the recording studio in just a few years -- and also of the incredible variety of her repertoire. Her explorations of the Baroque and Classical periods have offered delights as surprising as her 20th-century discs; even the most jaded music lover will make discoveries here.
Listeners new to Kozená will especially enjoy the excerpts from her earliest recordings. Her debut album of Bach arias -- which wasn't released in the U.S. when it came out in the late '90s -- supplies three highlights, most notably the sublime "Erbarme dich," sung with the same unaffected warmth and expression that always shines through in her performances. Kozená's subsequent recital of Czech Love Songs retains all of its charm, and the seven short, piquant songs by Janácek should prompt many listeners to seek out that album. In Rameau's opera Dardanus, she was heard in two minuscule bit parts, but this began a collaboration with conductor Marc Minkowski that has also produced a stellar complete recording of Handel's Giulio Cesare from which four of Cleopatra's arias are excerpted here and a sparkling recital of French Arias that includes Kozená's first venture into the Romantic repertoire and a very different Cleopatra aria by Massenet. Each track showcases the beauty of Kozená's voice, but two in particular -- Respighi's impressionistic Il tramonto and Johann Christoph Bach's intensely expressive lament Ach, dass ich Wassers g'nug hätte -- unfold on a larger scale, revealing Kozená's interpretive powers at their most impressive. More than just a snapshot of the singer's early career, this collection is also a promise of even finer work to come.
All Music Guide - James Leonard
If your ideal vocal recording places the performer next to your seat and your ideal vocal performance has the performer singing directly into your ear, this disc by mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená will be just about ideal. No matter what the repertoire -- and Kozená performs everything from Bach to Gounod to Shostakovich -- and no matter what the context -- and Kozená takes on everything from song to opera to oratorio -- Kozená is right next to the listener, singing straight into his/her ear. Given her exceedingly warm tone, her extremely rich delivery, and her extraordinarily sibilant pronunciation, Kozená's intimate delivery may be too much for those with heart conditions or those all too easily affected by singers. But for those made of sterner stuff, Kozená's performances here will be the stuff dreams are made of. From her intensely devotional "Erbarme dich" from Bach's "St. Matthew's Passion" to her wildly sensual "Les tringles des sistres tintalent" from Bizet's "Carmen," Kozená is a stunningly impressive and staggeringly effective singer. Accompanied by a wide range of conductors and pianists from French conductor Marc Minkowski to pianist Graham Johnson and recorded in clean, fresh Deutsche Grammophon, Kozená is absolutely irresistible for those susceptible to her charms.
