Meet the Author

James Maxwell found inspiration growing up in the lush forests of New Zealand and later in rugged Australia where he was educated. Devouring fantasy and science fiction classics at an early age, his love for books translated to a passion for writing, which he began at age eleven.

He relocated to London at age twenty-five but continued to seek inspiration wherever he could find it, in the grand cities of the old world and the monuments of fallen empires. His travels influenced his writing as he spent varying amounts of time in forty countries on six continents.

He wrote his first full-length novel, Enchantress, while living on an isle in Thailand and its sequel, The Hidden Relic, from a coastal town on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

The third book in the Evermen Saga, The Path of the Storm, was written in the Austrian Alps, and he completed the fourth, The Lore of the Evermen, in Malta.

When he isn't writing or traveling, James enjoys sailing, snowboarding, classical guitar, and French cooking.

I love stories where the characters reach out from the pages and become friends almost instantly. This book does that from page 1 and doesn't let up until the final page. Don't let the length scare you...it's worth every single page.

Excellent story. Wonderful character development. Reading a well written book just makes it that much more enjoyable. Grammatically correct and easy to read.I definitely recommend the second in the series, The Hidden Relic.

Fantastic book! Fresh fantasy with a new world that is easy to follow and yet keeps you learning throughout the book. The characters are well developed and likable, yet they have flaws and make mistakes and learn from them in a realistic way. Don't let the length scare you, there's enough excitement to last. I never felt like things were being drawn out just to fill pages. My copy also tended to have pages mislabeled. It wasn't enough to bother me in the slightest, but it does say it has 2001 pages on the bottom of my nook, and in reality it isn't that much. I would compare this book to something like Lord of the Rings, but easier to read. It's full of adventure, love, lore, drama, and enough comedy to crack a smile every once in awhile.  The sex scenes are not explicit, and I feel are necessary to character development. The war scenes are descriptive, but not overdone, and I feel are also necessary to get the point across. I also suggest you pay attention to the map included in the beginning of the book. I referenced it several times while reading in order to understand where each character was travelling, and what they might run into in their travels. I highly recommend this book to anybody who loves good fantasy novels, and I will definitely be purchasing the other books in the series!

This is a good one with interesting characters that grow (or regress) throughout the book. Magic develops as characters learn to use it. There are good plot twists and well described background scenes and characters. This writer knows what he's doing. Battle scenes are somewhat gory but that's necessary to the plot. I read this in one sitting, because I just HAD to see what happened next. This is first in a series and the author knows how to give a satisfying interim resolution to the book while leaving threads to future books. I'll be watching for the next one. Highly recommended.

Just finished reading this book. It was very hard to put down for the 1st, 1000 pages. The characters were well developed but I felt the story kinda faltered. Also did not like hanging at the end. several characters were left un accounted and were told to get the next book for $5.99. I suppose I will have to wait for a sale.

This book was on a special sale and I picked it up for almost nothing thinking it might be good. What a surprise! I could hardly put it down. A great summer read - or anytime for that matter. I've got Book Two now and love it just as much!

I just couldn't put it down. I thought it would take me a while to finish, but the story and its character drew me in and I finished it in less than two days! I'll definitely be reading it again.

I enjoyed this book. 2000 pages. I thought maybe they would finish it but of course there is a second book. I like the character Miro the most. Don't want to give anything away but I went ahead and bought the second book.

As a lover of well written series and amazing character developments I found this book to meet all my criteria for an excellent read. The detail, the action, the romance (not too much) the intrigue, the failures and successes of the characters draw you into its depths. I could not put it down. I have ordered the second in the series, and will be reading them all! I read the Tolkien books every three years or so, the Eragon books on about the same schedule, and Jim Butcher's Calderon series the same way.  All intriguing, all classic fantasy woven into a new world based on events that may have already happened.  Oh, the parallels you can draw!   Thank you sir!

Had great depth and flow. Loved the land and the characters.

Great story with a truly unique magic system. I enjoyed the gritty texture of the action and the fact that not everyone lived happily ever after. Excellent pace and the world is a fascinating mix of lore, cultures, and epic tales. I hope the author explores stories of the different houses in his future writings.
