Overview

For a time, Francophile extraordinaire Peter Mayle left the South of France and the pleasures and the pastimes he has chronicled to international renown. But not a day passed without a pang of longing for the home he had left behind. And so he returned to France and fell in love all over again with la vie Provencale.

In Encore Provence, Mayle presents his most appealing tribute to date on the joys of Gallic life. Here is a glimpse into the secrets of the truffle trade, a parfumerie lesson on the delicacies of scent, an exploration of the genetic effects of 2,000 years of foie gras, and a small-town murder mystery that reads like the best fiction. Here, too, are Mayle's latest tips on where to find the best honey, cheese, or chambre d'hìte the region has to offer. Lyric, insightful, sparkling with detail, Encore Provence brings us a land where the smell of thyme in the fields or the glory of a leisurely lunch is no less than inspiring.

This is my first experience with Peter Mayle's work. He guided me through Southern France, introducing me to a few interesting characters. Taught me about truffles and showed me the corkscrew capital. I found myself becoming very relaxed while immersed in the book. Now in many stressfull situations I just turn up my palms, shrug my shoulders and mutter "what can you do?" If you are looking for a nice comfortable read, for a brief change from the police, spy, violence and wars of the more mainstream authors, visit Provence with Mayer. It's worth the trip.

To tour Provencal France with Peter Mayle is to see and experience the best that France offers on a daily basis! I began my journey with A Year in Provence and was immediately enchanted! Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed each of Mr. Mayle's subsequent volumes on his life in Provence and the joys to be found there! I cannot wait for his next production! I have heard rumor of critics to his writings, but have never found a reader that did not love every chapter! All of my friends will receive copies of Peter Mayle's appreciation of Provence this year for Christmas.......and every year after, I very much hope!
