The Truth I found in this book filled me with a great sense of peace and serenity. However, I must admit that at times I, like the character Nathaniel in the book, resist opening myself to the Truth. I have the ability to block peace by holding onto old fears. I find that I can experience serenity when I allow myself to identify and challenge my fears. This book greatly aided me in understanding the distorted beliefs that create such fear.I have true freedom of the spirit, and a serenity I have never had before. I personally know many other people who feel the same way I do. This book has brought peace and freedom to many, and has helped us to understand a concept that can be so very difficult to comprehend. The book uses language and examples that are simple and basic. The majority of people are average good people who are trying to live life the best they can. Thanks to Clyde Lewis, We can now live that life with the guidance and strength of a loving, caring God. Thank you Clyde, for sharing your solution with me. As a psychologist and a theologian I have studied much about the human mind and the development of people's God Concept. Yet, in all of my exposure to psychological theory and theological rhetoric I have not experienced anything more powerful than the concepts found in Lewis' Encounter With A Prophet. In chapter after chapter we are reminded of the unconditional Love of God and our intrinsic connected-ness to all humankind. With that key concept in mind we are freed up to live and grow while experiencing a profound state of peace.

    Pedestrian thinking, all the way

The fundamental problem with the text is its failure to examine adequately the Christian tradition within its classical biblical context. Instead, Lewis' characters inspect and criticize a pre-Reformation idea of heaven, hell and God. In that sense, this is a thoroughly unhelpful text for those wishing to engage in a serious and critical examination of what the Christian scriptures actually say about those three things. Further, his lack of understanding of the Christian God leads to deeply questionable ethical pronouncements, all of which (especially his comments on extramarital sexuality) can and do lead to real emotional and physical problems for real people.

Easily the worst book I ever read..Read p71-80

I can only believe that the positive reviews here were written by the author himself. This is easily the worst written book I've read, and beyond writing style (or lack of it), the message is perverse and parents especially should preview this book, read pages 71-80 and I'm sure you'd ban this book from your house.

    Encounter with a Prophet

I could write a review of this book telling you that it is inspirational, life - changing, one of the best books I have read. That the book allowed me to transcend my problems, was on of the best book in its class. All of these statements would be true and would tell you the book was of value to me, but that does not answer the question Will you value the book so I will approach this review a little differently. A friend recently told me that her minister was giving a sermon on the controversial topic of abortion. He recited a few scriptures, telling his now emotionally charged congregation that the scriptures did not approve of abortion. Then he took a twenty dollar bill out of his pocket and asked if anyone wanted the twenty. A few people raised their hands and the minister approach a man in that group, crumbled up the twenty and ask the man if he still wanted the twenty. The man said yes. The preacher then threw the twenty on the floor ground it up with his shoe, picked up the now dirty twenty and asked the man if he still wanted it. The man said yes. The minister then tore the twenty in half and asked the man if he still wanted it. The man said yes. The minister then addressed the congregation telling them that regardless of what the scripture's say this is how our church must view souls who are also twisted, dirty and torn. We must see the value in them. Now if you felt something from this little story, I would say this book would be of value to you. If your ONLY response to the story was: Did the man get the twenty? You might wish to look for another book. If this little story touched something in you then I would believe you will find value in the following: Way of the Peaceful Warrior : A Book That Changes Lives A Return to Love After the Ecstasy, the Laundry : How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path

    Encounter with a Prophet

After re-reading Encounter With A Prophet I am again struck by the power of Truth. This book greatly aided me in understanding the distorted beliefs that create such fear. At first it seemed strange to me that such a simple story about a man's spiritual adventure could hold so much Truth. As a psychologist and a theologian I have studied much about the human mind and the development of people's God Concept. Yet, in all of my exposure to psychological theory and theological rhetoric I have not experienced anything more powerful than the concepts found in Lewis' Encounter With A Prophet. In chapter after chapter we are reminded of the unconditional Love of God and our intrinsic connectedness to all humankind. With that key concept in mind we are freed up to live and grow while experiencing a profound state of peace. In my professional work as a clinical psychologist I make use of helpful concepts from my psychological and and theological training. However, much of the psychological and theological theory is flawed at its core, and is therefore limiting. Many of the concepts in these theories are helpful because they contain truth. Yet, it extreme cases when pushed to their limits these flawed theories crumble. Such vulnerable theory is unacceptable to me in the practice of clinical psychology, because many cases are extreme. Hence, I only utilize psychological and theological concepts that I'm certain are based in Ulimate Truth. This Truth has at its core the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. In Encounter With a Prophet Lewis reminds us about the Ultimate Truth. He clears up some misconceptions which birth fear. He points to prayer and service as ways of practicing Truth and achieving peace. I encourage everyone to read this book, and I hope that you will allow its Truth to replace your fear with peace.
