Professor Tikaya Komitopis isn't a great beauty, a fearless warrior, or even someone who can walk and chew chicle at the same time, but her cryptography skills earn her wartime notoriety. When enemy marines show up at her family's plantation, she expects the worst.

But they're not there to kill her. They need her to decode mysterious runes, and they ask for help in the manner typical of a conquering empire: they kidnap her, threaten her family, and throw her in the brig of their fastest steamship.

Her only ally is a fellow prisoner who charms her with a passion for academics as great as her own. Together, they must decipher mind-altering alchemical artifacts, deadly poison rockets, and malevolent technological constructs, all while dodging assassination attempts from a rival power determined the expedition should fail. As if the situation weren't treacherous enough, this new "ally" may turn out to be the last person Tikaya should trust. Those runes cloak more than mysteries, however, and he's the only one who can help her unravel them before their secrets destroy the world.

Encrypted (A+) is a fun romp, an adventure in the Lois Bujold Barrayar spirit, with a clear ending though ample scope for more and which I highly recommend if you like your sff fast, page turning with action, mysteries and a dash of romance.

Encrypted is one of those rare cross-genre books that can't fail to please readers of all different tastes. The characters are well-drawn, the danger is very real, and the world is carefully detailed. Buroker's knack for snappy dialogue and sardonic asides ensure laughs. The romance between a self-described klutzy cryptologyst and her mysterious leading man) is very satisfying without ever getting too sweet. All in all, a great read!

This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter fantasy--there are a few unique steampunk and sci-fi elements thrown in as well. The characters were fun (my #1 requirement in a book), and the action moved right along--fans of speculative fiction should not be disappointed! I'll be reading Emperor's Edge, the next book set in this world, for sure, and am looking forward to more from Ms. Buroker.

Liked it enough to get the next book, Decrypted, which was also good.

This is my favorite book by Lindsay Buroker so far. The characters are interesting and complex, and the world is given even more depth by this addition to the Emperor's Edge world. Highly recommended.

Anyone reading the "Emperor's Edge" series won't want to miss this, but can be enjoyed on its own for what makes all of Lindsay Buroker's books great: humor and fun, good character development, action and adventure. Tikaya is an endearing heroine: smart, funny, accident-prone. Loved the glimpse of young Sicarius. I've read all of Buroker's books now and highly recommend all of them.

I really liked this book, strong (if not a bit clumsy!), resourceful and intelligent female character, action packed story line, that will keep you turning ages til the end which comes along too quickly! Looking forward to the next installment.

I'm not one for long reviews so I'll keep this short. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the characters & the plot kept me interested to the end. I am looking forward to reading the next book, Emperor's Edge. Lindsay Buroker is going on my must read author's list, she tells an intriguing, hard to put down story.

Lots of action, terrific world-building, strong characterization, narrow escapes, and a sweet romance. Highly recommended to fans of Devon Monk, Annie Bellet, and the Indiana Jones films. -- lyradora

There's enough straight science to balance the fantasy (artificers of magic, telepathy, telekinetics, etc.), a good plot, and excellent characters. Particularly the characters - they're interesting, believable, entertaining, and you want to follow their stories.

Adventure, romance, science, magic; this tale has it all!

I loved Rias (Admiral Starcrest) and Tikaya's story. The adventure, action, and sweet romance are very well done. Plus, we get a glimpse of a 17 year old tall, blonde, stealth like character that plays an intigral part in Linsay Buroker's Emperor's Edge series. While this series is separate, there are familiar characters, and to tell you the truth, the Emperor's Edge series is so good and so addicting, you will be seeking out every little tidbit you can to fill the void until the next book is released :-) 699 pages
