Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
When Police Chief Brown tells his family about the theft of a museum sculpture, it doesn't take long for his son, ten-year old Leroy, better known as Encyclopedia, to solve the mystery. Encyclopedia is known for being a super-sleuth even though he and his sidekick, Sally Kimball, only charge 25 cents to help those who need it. All books in the "Encyclopedia Brown" series are fast-paced reads able to grab the attention of youngsters ready for adventure. This book is no different, except it is made up of ten mini mysteries instead of one tale. Alert readers may be able to solve some of the mysteries on their own. If not, the answers and Encyclopedia's reasoning can be found at the end of the book. The mini mysteries are appealing to youngsters who may only have a few minutes to read at a time. Being able to weigh evidence, and draw conclusions is a stimulating learning activity for readers. In addition, readers will be able to relate to the mystery scenarios and the likable characters of Encyclopedia and Sally. The book's title may be a bit confusing as it makes the book come across as featuring just one case to solve. Regardless, the book is fun and thought-provoking and will fly off the shelves in early elementary grade classrooms. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
