Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
A home burglary, a ruined library book, and a rigged soccer game are a few of the mysteries that Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown solves in this twenty-eighth installment of Sobol's popular "Encyclopedia Brown" series. Encyclopedia is known for his mystery-solving prowess, for which he always charges twenty-five cents. He even helps his police chief father with his cases. Like all books in the series, ten-year-old Encyclopedia deals with ten mysteries, often aided by his friend Sally Kimball. Readers will also recognize the aptly named Bugs Meany as a recurring nemesis. As always, Encyclopedia invites readers to solve the mystery before going to the end of the book for the answer. The average story length of seven pages, large print, and plenty of white space between lines make it easy for reluctant readers, and trying to solve the mystery may encourage re-reading, a strategy that helps to improve reading skills. Bernardin provides two or three line drawings per story, just right for those who still want pictures in their chapter books. Encyclopedia Brown has been challenging young readers to solve puzzles for almost fifty years. Sadly, the author died in July of 2012, so unless someone else is allowed to take over for Sobol, this book will be the last we see of Encyclopedia Brown. Reviewer: Magi Evans
