Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Criminals have it rough in Idaville thanks to Leroy Brown, better known as Encyclopedia Brown. The ten-year-old detective whiz and son of Idaville's police chief uses his remarkable memory and eye for detail to help solve the toughest cases around. When not helping his father, he and partner Sally Kimball safeguard the neighborhood with their detective agency ("no case too small"). Each of the ten short chapters is a separate case in which Encyclopedia goes head-to-head with a different criminal. Among this book's collection of miscreants are a marble thief, a swindler, and a cheat. Like a twentieth-century Sherlock Holmes, Encyclopedia examines the scene of the crime, talks to the involved parties, and watches closely for clues. He then makes pronouncements of guilt, and readers are invited to match wits with the detective by figuring out how he came to his conclusion, after which they can check the detailed answer provided at the end of the book. Although a bit dated—how many kids smoke coffee in a homemade pipe these days? —this reissue of a well-loved series will likely be just as popular with modern mystery fans as it was with the original readers. We purchased this series for our son when he was young - he's in his 30's now - when we discovered the series was still being published we started purching them for young family members - they are enjoying them just as much as our son did. Two of the boys that we've purchased these books for DO NOT like to read BUT really enjoy and will read this series - so this is a big plus for this series for young boys.
