4.5 ALIEN SKULLS OUT OF 5. Delivers on all levels...[E.H.] would make a great spooky holiday present.
Razor Reel
Aimed at kids and teens, [E.H.] is also nice reading for the not-so-adult grown-ups. . . . Tons of references and links for each one of us to further investigate the unknown.

A handsome hardcover volume with a lenticular frontispiece...A must-have for your reference shelf. GRADE: A.

The author of this compendium of the strange and unexplained creates an enjoyable excursion to the dark side with tongue firmly planted in cheek. The first section of the book examines the big four: vampires, sea monsters, aliens, and werewolves. Each topic is replete with color illustrations and photos and is accompanied by a light, readable text that tries to separate fact from fiction. Many pop-culture figures from movies and books are tossed in with much legend and lore. Another segment of the book examines ghosts, including famous historical sightings, spirits caught on film, and spirits that inhabit animals and appliances. It also recounts the techniques and experiences of real-life ghost hunters. The creepy photos reproduced here of supposed ghosts are fascinating. The final section of the book digresses a bit into unusually gruesome shops and restaurants and some bizarre hobbies and professions. (Does geocaching really belong here?) It ends with a look at psychic phenomenon (test yourself and your friends using Zener flash cards), the scariest-ever books and authors, how genuine zombies are made, a look at a few famous hoaxes, superstitions, long-lived curses, and a photo-crime puzzle to solve. It is all in good fun and packed with informative tidbits. Teens eat this stuff up and with its breezy style and colorful layout, it should prove popular in most collections. Reviewer: Kevin Beach
Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Open this frightening book and read the first line: "Turn back! Now! While you still can!" With that enticement, who could stop reading? Truly an encyclopedia of frightening spooks, the knowledge and surprises will fulfill the quest of horror seekers. First the author shares real nightmares: Count Dracula, becoming a vampire through story and film; krackens and sharks, aliens and werewolves. Interspersed into each part/chapter is a page contrasting Hollywood's version and history's version. Professor Paranormal does a Q&A, asserting that anything that cannot be explained using normal science should be considered paranormal. Ghosts and ghost-hunters, genuine and authentic will bring nightmares to anyone. Sometimes referred to as "a remarkable coincidence, "the readers will be first confused, then recognize the tongue-in-cheek assertions, or will they? Part Four forecasters predict that the future will be cloudy with a 100% chance of awful. From Horrific HQ the reader is assured that they "steadfastly pursue all of the most slithery, undead, repulsive, and/or foul-smelling answers to each question." More illustrations than any encyclopedia, the photos and art work lend themselves to win over even the most rigid skeptic. Index and bibliography will satisfy those curious for further study. There are 101 secrets inside this book. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin

ENCYCLOPEDIA HORRIFICA is the perfect book for anyone who loves the spooky, the eerie, and the downright weird. Want to know about ghosts, vampires, ESP, werewolves, or anything else even partially paranormal? Then this is definitely the book for you!

The book is broken down into four main parts: Real Nightmares, "That's the Spirit!", Every Day is Halloween, and Fearsome Fates.

In part one, you can read about vampires, sea creatures, aliens, and werewolves. Part two covers ghosts: where to find them, how to catch them, when they've been caught on film, and animals who could have been extras on the movie Pet Sematary. Part three includes weird shops (where you can even buy a three-pound jar of dead flies), ESP and other psychic abilities, phobias and superstitions, and the most horrific books you could ever find on a bookshelf. Part four covers zombies, pixies and faeries, mummies, and everything death related.

This book is hilariously horrifying. Although that may sound like an oxymoron, author Joshua Gee has made sure to make the facts he covers interesting, funny, and entertaining. Besides being a reference book, this is one tome that you'll find yourself reading over and over again for its pure entertainment value.

Although the author made sarcastic and funny comments throughout the book, the facts, stories and pictures were very interesting and fascinating. I would definetly recommend to have for personal collection.
