Overview

Featuring entries on c.600 British writers—with those of the 16th and 17th centuries in v.1 and the 18th century in v.2—this reference provides an excellent introduction to a wide range of authors, their works, and times for the high school and beginning undergraduate student. Entries on influential non-British writers are also included. Each volume begins with an historical introduction highlighting key events and issues of the era, written by Gregory M. Colon Semenza (English, U. of Connecticut) and Hagar (English, State U. of New York, Cortland). Each volume also contains a separate, thorough index, author's timeline, and a selected bibliography. The entries contain the writer's dates, a brief biography, discussion of their work, and frequently, an excerpt of their writings. For the more well-known writers, a section is included of critical analysis of their chief works. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Complementing Facts On File's Encyclopedia of British Writers: 19th and 20th Centuries, this two-volume set provides curriculum-based information on 600 British writers from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, including John Milton, William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Daniel Defoe, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Ann Radcliffe. As Hager (Major Tudor Authors) notes in the introduction, it was a time when "literature served as a bridge between the ancient and the modern worlds, balancing the tensions that emerge when revolutionary ideas clash with traditional values." The entries for the most part don't exceed one page and consist of biographical information, details about each person's work, and lists of further reading. A good choice for libraries catering to high school and undergraduate students. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
