Overview

The definitive one-volume reference to the armies, arms, and actions of the century that defined modern warfare.
The Napoleonic Wars opened the century; the American Civil War punctuated its midpoint. Throughout, conflict seldom abated, whether between the European powers on their own continent or between their colonial proxies around the world. Byron Farwell, an authoritative and engaging chronicler of military history, illuminates here all aspects of this colorful, horrifying, compelling century of war.
Global in reach, the encyclopedia covers Latin American rebellions; African, Indian, and Southeast Asian conflicts; Chinese and Japanese actions; and the Indian wars of North America. It is comprehensive, with coverage of weapons development, battles and campaigns, military leaders, and more. Farwell's treatment of military medicine and wartime journalism is unmatched, and his interpretive essays relate events and people to one another and to the century's technological and scientific trends.
Including nearly 1,000 illustrations reproduced from period sources, this groundbreaking encyclopedia is destined to become a much-used and desired reference.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Eminent British historian Farwell wrote 13 books (e.g., Eminent Victorian Soldiers) before dying in 1999 and leaving his legacy of this ambitious, carefully researched, and well-presented book on the history of 19th-century land warfare. From "Abatis" to "Zundnadelgewehr," this massive tome comprises more than 5500 entries and 1000 illustrations. The 19th century greatly influenced warfare, and Farwell ensures that the reader is clearly informed on the social, political, and technological changes that occurred from the Napoleonic Era to the Spanish-American War. His is a global perspective, covering wars, battles, sieges, soldiers, generals, weapons, equipment, camp life, medicine, fortifications, heroes and cowards, and definitions of 19th-century military terms. The expected entries will be found, along with such little-known ones as "Leap Over the Sword," "Mad Mullah of Somaliland," the unusual "Pastry War of 1838," "Soldier's Thigh," and "Ramrod Bread." Although expensive, this is a very entertaining read and a useful research source for students and military history buffs alike. Recommended for public libraries.--Col. William D. Bushnell, USMC, ret., Sebascodegan Island, ME Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Booknews
The late Byron Farwell served as an engineer in the British forces of World War II and was an author of at least seven books on various aspects of military history. In this encyclopedia, a labor of love intended for both scholars and general readers, entries include information on wars, revolutions, battles, sieges, spies, soldiers, technical military terms, weapons, and other aspects of 19th-centruy wars and military life. The length of an entry does not necessarily correspond to its importance. Some lesser conflicts and minor personalities are given more space, because information is not readily available elsewhere; and conversely, if information on a topic is widely available, the entry is short. Small b&w images enhance the text. A selected bibliography is included at the end of the volume. Indexing, at least by country or general topic would have improved this otherwise carefully prepared reference. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
