Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Simply put, this is an essential reference resource for students of African history... Highly recommended for both academic and public libraries."Library Journal
Library Journal
Only in the last half of the 20th century was a widespread belief that Africa was a "Dark Continent" without history and frozen in "primitivism" replaced by the research of scholars working in the West and in Africa. It is now clear that African history is as old as the human species and has its own unique developments. Edited by freelance historian Shillington (History of Africa), this encyclopedia attempts to bring together the results of decades of research with over 1000 articles written by leading contemporary historians. The scope of the coverage encompasses the entire continent, including North Africa, and features all historical periods, with special attention to recent events. Most entries are given 1000 words, though major topics, such as regional surveys, stretch to 3000-4000 words. Topics range from art to anthropology to economics, but emphasis is placed on biographies and country studies, both pre- and postcolonial. Entries may be accessed alphabetically, thematically, or through a detailed index. Bottom Line Simply put, this is an essential reference resource for students of African history. Highly recommended for both academic and public libraries.-Eugene C. Burt, Cornish Coll. of the Arts, Seattle Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
