School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Two hundred alphabetically arranged essays make up this useful set that covers the basics of American government. Well-written, illuminating articles range from broad subjects such as Federalism to more specific topics such as "Iron Triangles" and reflect an awareness for gender and minority issues. Each 500-to-2500 word essay is preceded by a concise definition and is followed by a bibliography. A particularly noteworthy strength of this set is the inclusion of visual materials including poignant black-and-white photographs and illustrations, and informative charts and maps. Additionally, the accompanying captions augment rather than repeat the text. The thorough index includes cross-references, and a list of subjects arranged in broad categories increases access to the articles. Although reference resources on this topic abound, most speak to a particular area, such as congress or the presidency. This set is unique in its attempt to offer a basic overview suitable for students unfamiliar with government and political issues.-Angela J. This four-volume set addresses not only basic subjects ordinarily covered in middle and secondary school, but a wide range of contemporary issues. Two-hundred alphabetically arranged articles vary in length from 500 to 2,500 words, each opening with a clear statement defining the subject of the essay and summarizing its significance in American government. Emphasis is on how government and politics actually work at the local, state, and national levels. Essays are cross-referenced and are supplemented by mini-essays illuminating specific issues. Generously illustrated with about 350 b&w photographs as well as charts, maps, and tables. The index is in Volume IV. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
