A Record of American Heroes At Just The Right Time!

Wanting to more about American War heroes since the recent and heroic rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch, I was amazed at the history of our other heroic military men and women offered in Maj. Doc Norton's latest book. This work covers heroic accomplisments on the battlefield by Americans since 1650 and concludes in entries from 2001. I believe that Major Norton has done a masterful job of providing a great sampling of American War heroes. As a high school history teacher, I have used the examples within this book to enhance and educate my students. This book has served to spark and understanding of just what it takes to serve in combat as Marine, sailor, soldier or airmen. We now have a much clearer picture of the many responsibilities of our NCOs and Officers, thanks, in part, to Maj. Norton's latest book and to those reporters 'embedded' with our men and women in combat, in Iraq. I hope that there will be more volumes to come. I'd give this book a solid 5 stars.

A Great Record of Military Heroism!!!

An Encyclopedia of Amereican War Heroes is, in my opinion, a wonderful collection of the deeds of America's bravest men and women on the battlefield. While there are some familiar names and faces, there are also many new [unknown] names who have finally come to light. I think that this book should be in every public school library across the Nation. Forget sports heroes, the likes of Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan or Mark McGuire, men who couldn't carry any of these real heroe's jock-straps. Theses Privates, Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains are the real thing. I have read other books written by Major 'Doc' Norton, and this is one of his best efforts, ever. I think this book would also be great gift for anyone who has served, or is planning to serve, in our Armed Forces. It is a great awakening to what real heroes have done to protect our rights, liberty and freedom during the last 300 years. While not every "hero" can be listed in just one volume, this book gives "a great sampling" of those men and women who have given so much of themselves. A great and valuable book!!!

Where REAL "role models" are truly defined!

"Hats off" to Major 'Doc' Norton, USMC (Ret.) for another superb effort as the author of Encyclopedia of American War Heroes. This reference book provides a great sampling of those men and women who have distinguished themselves on the battlefield throughout our Nation's history. As Norton explains in his introduction, this is a just a "sampling of heroes" when one considers that there are more than 3,000 Medal of Honor recepients, alone. Included in this work are more than 400 individuals (many with photographs)who have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, Silver Star or the Bronze Star. Additionally, the book is culturally inclusive, making note of the heroic contributions of Native Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans and Hispanic Americans. All branches of the American Armed Forces are represented, as are all ranks from private to General Officers. The author knows well of what he writes; a "Mustang" Marine Corps Officer, Norton served as a Navy Corpsman with a Marine Force Reconnaissance Company during the Vietnam War. Wounded in combat and decorated for heroism under fire, he has his own definition of the word "Hero." A military historian, he is the author of numerous books on and about the Marine Corps. Here, he has done a masterfull job in presenting hundreds of short biographies of great American military heroes, which should inspire his readers to find out more about those listed -- our Nation's REAL ROLE MODELS. An Encyclopedia of American War Heroes is one of those "must have" books that will undoubtedly grace the livingroom coffee-table of every American veteran. Timing for the publication of this book could not have been any better --the perfect Christmas present for 2002! If you want to read about "heroes," this is the book to buy!
