Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A crime reporter and author of numerous books and articles on crime, Sifakis (The Mafia Encyclopedia, LJ 4/1/99) has updated the 1991 edition of his reference book on assassinations. Sifakis states that the 400 assassinations listed in this encyclopedic work are limited selections of "the most notorious acts of their kind." In alphabetical order, he provides the names of the prominent leaders and politicians targeted, indicating whether he or she was the victim of an assassination, an attempted assassination, or an alleged attempt. In his coverage of political figures, Sifakis defines the term broadly to include not only rulers and politicians but also people targeted by the old KGB, the South African police during apartheid, or other armed forces. Rajiv Gandhi and Yitzhak Rabin are among the prominent assassination victims included since Sifakis's last edition. Sifakis provides resources for further reading, and a helpful appendix lists assassinations by country. Libraries that did not purchase the 1991 edition will definitely want to obtain this book, but those that already have the 1991 edition may need to consider whether it is worth replacing an expensive book (at least in hardcover) that contains no new preface or introduction. Library Journal
Assassination is probably humanity's oldest form of political protest; certainly it has been with us almost as long as civilization. The present volume contains over 350 assassinations and attempted assassinations from antiquity to the present. The brief articles (five pages is the longest) provide little biographical information about the victim, concentrating instead on the political circumstances that precipitated the act. All the familiar victims are included, plus a great many recognizable only by a dedicated assassination buff. While the book adds nothing new to the literature of assassination, it does pull together a lot of material from many different sources. Given the current popularity of true crime stories, this very browsable work is sure to be of interest to the general public. For larger public libraries and those with a high demand for this sort of thing.-- Melvin L. Grotberg, Hobbs P.L., N.M.

YA-- A quick glance at assassinations and attempted assassinations through the ages, illustrated with black-and-white photos and sketches. Many entries include additional reading suggestions for those seeking more information.
This update of the unique 1991 reference details some 300 politically- motivated assassinations/attempts from ancient to modern times, alphabetically listed from Comoro Islands' ruler A. Abdullah in 1989 (it took four tries) to Bangladesh president General Ziaur in 1981. The most recent assassination covered is that of an indicted Serbian war criminal in 2000. Includes a listing by country; and b&w illustrations of victims and assassins. Sifakis, the freelance author of , does not endorse conspiracy theories nor the view that such murders invariably change the course of history. Annotation c.
