Editorial Reviews

Zom Zoms
Gale went to the experts to determine the content of this new encyclopedia. An advisory panel of academics and practitioners helped develop and define the scope of a list of 700 business topics deemed essential for inclusion. Internal business functions such as finance, human resources, and marketing are covered, as are external elements that affect businesses, such as technology, environmental concerns, and federal laws. Both current and classical areas of interest are discussed in signed essays written by business school professors, members of the business community, and business writers. Essays range in length from less than a column for "Arab Common Market" to more than 10 pages for" Budgeting"; the preface states that the average entry length is approximately 2,500 words. Written in nontechnical language, the essays generally begin with a definition of the topic, then combine a theoretical and practical approach to explain relevant concepts and issues. They provide an excellent source of background for topics ranging from "Absenteeism" to "Zero Economic Growth" Most entries include one or more boldfaced terms that point the reader toward related entries of interest. "See also" references appear when direct reference to related entries is not within the text. Unfortunately, neither the boldfacing of related terms nor the use of cross-references is consistent. The entry "Teams", for example, discusses quality circles, but this term is not in bold, even though there is the separate entry "Quality Circles". There are no cross-references between the entries "Gender and Leadership" and "Glass Ceiling", although both entries discuss the reasons why there are so few women in upper-management positions. Although the introduction describes entrepreneurship/small business as one of four major issues addressed by the encyclopedia, there are few cross-references within these topics: none from "Family-Owned Businesses" or "Entrepreneurship" to "Small Businesses", for example. Lists of further reading are often provided to assist researchers who want to explore a topic in more detail, and some entries contain tables or diagrams A "Discipline Index" offers access by way of 31 broad business disciplines. The general index contains references to important or unusual terms; names of companies, institutions, and associations; key government agencies; specific legislation; relevant court cases; names of prominent individuals; and titles of groundbreaking studies mentioned in the encyclopedia. The indexes are much more reliable than the special features for locating related entries. With this caveat, the "Encyclopedia of Business" is a useful addition to business collections in academic and public libraries.
Booknews
A comprehensive reference that provides information on both classical and current business concepts, issues, terms, theories, and models. Some 700 signed essays, written in nontechnical language, cover a wide variety of topics such as AIDS in the workplace, cost benefit analysis, Gross National Product, Japanese manufacturing techniques, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), trade barriers, and the World Bank. Among the major issues addressed in numerous entries are entrepreneurship/small business, the globalization of business, quality, and diversity. Some entries are accompanied by graphs, charts, and tables. Includes general and business-discipline indexes. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
