Overview

In the third edition of Howard Rosenthal’s best-selling test preparation guide for the National Counselor Examination (NCE), students get more help than ever with an expanded section on marriage and family counseling, new material on web counseling, and updated material throughout. This resource now includes over 1,050 tutorial questions/answers and a new "Final Review and Last Minute Super Review Boot Camp" section. This guide is an ideal review tool for state licensing, the NCC credential, and preparation for written and oral boards. And because the new Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE), draws from the same subject areas, the Encyclopedia is a perfect study guide for the CPCE as well. Written in a unique question/answer format, with a quick reference index, this is also an essential student reference volume for use in any counseling, social work, or human services course.

    Want to Pass the CPCE?

If you want to pass the CPCE with no trouble, you will use this book! I was so nervous about the test, but this book has the answers. There are also some great CD's that can be purchased with it that also help. I am keeping it around to study for the LPC Exam when the time comes. He provides the information in a review-type format and bases it off of his knowledge of these tests. He uses humor and gives cool tips and hints for remembering things! Now this isn't something you sit down and read in it's entirety in one day for fun, but it serves its purpose WELL! :)

    Not helpful.

I recently took the NCE exam and used Rosenthol's book as a guide. After being encouraged by others to purchase this book, I did with the confidence I would do well on the exam. After reading this book twice, answering all questions and learning devices for every theorist and principle listed in the book, the day of the exam, this book did not help me whatsoever. I'm disappointed at the fact that this text is not edited well, the humor gets in the way of learning, and some information in the book is contradictory. If you want to feel prepared for the NCE exam, go to the NCE website and use books suggested by the organization itself.

    Simply The Best

If your goal is to become a professional counselor I would encourage you to purchase this book. My Masters program was solid but it did not prepare me for the National Counselors Exam. I bought this book in May 2002. I studied it for two hours a day. I took the NCE in October 2002. I scored 124 points. I am now a Licensed Professional Counselor. I give this book the credit.

Very helpful for both the CPCE and NCE.  I used this book in add

Very helpful for both the CPCE and NCE.  I used this book in addition to the CDs.  I really would recommend getting both and then reselling them after you PASS your tests.  I scored within the top 95% of all of those who took the test and used only those two materials to study.

This was a excellent review and a easy format to follow. I read the book in detail and passed the test even with test anxieties.

    Not what I expected

It is not quite the resource that I expected, but I am using it and will continue to do so as I prepare for my studies.

In the middle of trying to study

I am horrible at exam time! After this many years of schooling you would think it would get better. This book is helping so much to put the confidence in me to go and take this test. Our graduate program has a written exam that we must take and it is helping us prepare for that plus the NCE. The audio tapes have been extremely useful as well. I'll let you know if I pass!

    Encyclopidia of counseling

O.K. I looked at my notes from graduate school --they're in separate piles, these notes that made such sense when I took them are now chicken scratches. In a fret, I bought this Encyclopedia of Counseling. Rosenthal has taken the elements of the National Counseling Exam and broken it down into useable bites. Questions are given with enough explanation so to jog the memory on the subject matter, at the same time, offering brief explanations of why other answers are not correct. One cannot miss the confidence/smug attitude the author projects in the book...
