Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Providing an interdisciplinary approach to the environmental sciences, this set presents "succinct accounts of the core values and issues surrounding humanity's relationship to the natural world." Emphasis is on the AngloAmerican perspective, with a slight international flavor. Compiled by Callicott and Frodeman-both authors of numerous books on the environment-the 300plus signed entries range in coverage from literary figures, philosophy, and religion to the social sciences, sciences, and technology. Biographical entries are limited to individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the field and are either deceased or over 70 years old. Almost all of the contributors are academics, and all are identified by name, title, and affiliation; the institutions represented include Michigan State University, the University of Texas, McGill University, and Universidad de Magallanes (Chile), among others. All articles include See also references and a brief bibliography; however, crossreferences do not appear within the text, and this makes it necessary for the reader to consult the See also references, detailed index, and Thematic Outline for complete access to all related information on a topic. BOTTOM LINEThis title complements Routledge's fivevolume Environmental Philosophy: Critical Concepts in the Environment, also by Callicott. Most useful to undergraduate students but of interest to larger public libraries and environmental science collections in need of a general interdisciplinary environmental science resource.
