Overview

This A-to-Z guide to feminist literature covers everything from the movement's origins in literature of the distant past, such as the poetry of Sappho and classic tales such as Cinderella and Bluebeard, to the movement's flowering with the works of writers such as George Eliot, Willa Cather, and Virginia Woolf, to the continued development of feminist literature today. Hundreds of comprehensive entries explore a wide range of works by writers from around the world and in a number of genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and criticism.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This A-to-Z is a useful compendium of articles on the themes, events, literary characters, genres, and writers significant to an understanding of feminist literature, women in literature, and women's writing. Snodgrass, the author of several Facts On File reference works, surveyed syllabi, reading lists, textbooks, and seminar topics for courses on women's studies to come up with the 500 subjects explored in the mostly one-page cross-referenced entries. A wide variety of feminist writers (e.g., Helen Keller, Joyce Carol Oates), works (e.g., Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior), and literary motifs (e.g., goddess lore, sexuality) is covered, including works (as well as writers and characters) not originally written with feminism as a known concept (e.g., Lady Macbeth). Some entries suggest that the book has been a few years in the making (e.g., the entry for Gish Jen does not include her 2004 publication). Features include a comprehensive index, a list of authors by genre, a list of major authors of feminist literature and their works, a time line of feminist literature, a primary- and a secondary-source bibliography, and a filmography. Bottom Line Other reference works-e.g., Greenwood's Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature (2004) and Oxford's A Handbook of Literary Feminisms (2002)-cover the same ground, but none as comprehensively. Reasonably priced and engaging throughout, it is recommended for all school, public, and academic libraries.-Denise Johnson, Bradley Univ., Peoria, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
