Overview

The Encyclopedia of Heart Diseases is an accurate and reliable source of in-depth information on the diseases that kill more than 12 million individuals worldwide each year. In fact, cardiovascular diseases are more prevalent than the combined incidence of all forms of cancer, diabetes, asthma and leukemia. In one volume, this Encylopedia thoroughly covers these ailments and also includes in-depth analysis of less common and rare heart conditions to round out the volume's scope. Researchers, clinicians, and students alike will all find this resource an invaluable tool for quick reference before approaching the primary literature.

• Coverage of more than 200 topics, including: applied pharmacology of current and experimental cardiac drugs, gene therapy, MRI, electron-beam CT, PET scan put in perspective, cardiac tests costs and justification, and new frontiers in cardiovascular research
• More than 150 helpful figures and illustrations!
• Dr. Khan is a well-published and respected expert in heart and heart diseases

Audience: Cardiologists, pharmacologists, hematologists, geneticists, pathologists.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of fatality for both men and women in the United States, accounting for one death every 34 seconds. In this single volume, cardiologist Khan (medicine, Univ. of Ottawa, Canada; Heart Disease Diagnosis and Therapy: A Practical Approach) addresses various conditions, contributing factors, treatments, parts of anatomy, and more, from Anderson-Fabry disease, blood clots, and fish/fish oils to murmurs and pacemakers. More than 200 conditions are discussed or defined in the 91 main entries. Each entry begins with a glossary of terms, is broken down into logical sections that expound on the topic at hand, and ends with a bibliography of the literature. Entries range from one page ("Antihistamines") to 33 pages ("Heart Attacks") and are accompanied by more than 150 figures and illustrations. Bottom Line Khan presents a well-organized and easy-to-use reference that amounts to a Conn's Current Therapy (W.B. Saunders Co., 2004) for heart diseases. It is great as a starting point for clinicians and students researching a topic or for consumers needing greater explanation and depth. Highly recommended.-Howard Fuller, Stanford Health Lib., Palo Alto, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
