This important encyclopedia provides a needed international perspective on the problem of homelessness. Some 142 scholars, researchers, and organizations from throughout the world have contributed over 150 well-written and -researched entries on topics like causes of homelessness, groups of people affected, ways in which cities and countries deal with the problem, various government and private programs, problems with addiction to drugs and alcohol, and more. Entries run from several paragraphs to several pages in length and include bibliographies of books, articles, government documents, and web sites, as well as sidebars providing additional information. Volume 2 includes five appendixes as well as a bibliography on autobiographical and fictional accounts of homelessness, a filmography of American narrative and documentary films on the subject, a directory of street newspapers, a documentary history of homelessness from the Bible to the June 2003 U.S. Conference of Mayors, and a 1600-title bibliography of sources used to research and write the work. Bottom Line This valuable reference provides an excellent overview of a serious world-wide problem. As such, it is an essential purchase for all libraries. Stephen L.
