I bought this book, just because I like the colorful photos and figures, and also it was only $30 for such a huge volume. Only later I found that I made the best purchase ever. This book is filled with thorough detailed scientific information about each species, and also colorful photos and drawings. Thus this is a very very good book for yourself and also your kids as well. I brought this to my laboratory (biological lab) and lots of my colleagues are buying it too. I gurantee that this will be one book you will never regret and will open again and again.

The Encyclopedia of Mammals is a huge 930 page book that weighs about 10 lbs. There are so many photographs and illustrations of different types of mammals that it's hard to look at them all in one sitting. It's divided up into categories: cat family, dog family, bears, weasels, whales, seals, primates, hoofed animals, rabbits, bats, rodents, marsupials and many more. They haven't left any living mammal out, including several you've never heard of. Each animal has a statistics file telling habitat, size, appearance, diet and longevity and also a map showing world distribution. Keep in mind that this is a book of wild mammals, so if you are looking for domestic dog breeds, you won't find it. There are detailed masterful articles about behavior, diet, social life, conservation, and other relevant topics, but they are written in everyday language. Anyone who likes mammals is sure to find something that they like about this book. Highly recommended.

This comprehensive encyclopedia, expanded from one to three volumes and updated to include the latest scientific developments since the 1984 edition, should reach a broad audience. The information is presented in a consistent format, and color photographs, maps, and sketches make the set visually appealing. At the same time, each entry is authoritative and informative enough to be useful to students. The three volumes are divided into carnivores and sea mammals; primates and large herbivores; and marsupials/insect eaters/small herbivores. Mammals are subdivided first by order, whose common features are highlighted in a general essay, and then by family. Each family receives its own chapter, which begins with an overview of the characteristics of the family, including form and function, social behavior, distribution, and conservation and environment. Lesser-known species are treated as a group, with a brief description of each species. Each chapter includes a "Factfile" sidebar that gives a quick summary of the family's habitat, distribution, diet, breeding, longevity, and status. Families with many species have longer entries, which are supplemented by additional articles labeled "special feature." The third volume includes a complete species list and comprehensive index. As a three-volume set, this work is obviously more comprehensive than the single-volume Animal: The Definitive Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife (LJ 11/1/01), covering approximately 4600 species; however, Animal's 2000 species include nonmammals. Editor MacDonald, a respected scholar in the study of mammals and an award-winning filmmaker, has combined both skills to produce an excellent resource.
