Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These two volumes, featuring more than 200 cross-referenced entries and 300 four-color photographs, are meant to complement the material that is typically taught in both high school and college introductory chemistry and physics courses. The encyclopedia includes a breakdown of the entries arranged by the National Science Education Content Standards. Each entry features concepts and topics, theories, subdisciplines, biographies of notable people and their contributions, common methods and techniques relevant to modern science, and recommended readings. From acid rain, Albert Einstein, and the greenhouse effect to organic chemistry and the theory of everything, this set is a fascinating overview of the integration of the physical sciences with life, Earth, and space science. Rosen received his Ph.D. in physics from the Hebrew University and is the author of the best-selling Encyclopedia of Physics; Gothard received her M.S. in biochemistry from the University of Kentucky. BOTTOM LINE This set will meet the needs of students, interested lay readers, and working professionals exploring the interdisciplinary fields of science, physics, and chemistry. The layout, color illustrations, and numerous tables make this an accessible reference on an important topic.—Kathleen A. Welton, Chicago
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—In collaboration with a high school science educator, Rosen recasts his challenging Encyclopedia of Physics (Facts On File, 2004) with fewer but longer articles, higher-quality illustrations, and updated information. The coauthors open with a table of articles keyed to the National Research Council's "National Science Education Standards for Content (Grades 9–12)," close with back matter highlighted by annotated and usably sized lists of multimedia resources, and in between offer more than 200 alphabetically arranged entries. The articles range in scope from "Big Bang Theory" to "Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis," and in topic from "Acid Rain" and "Acoustics" to "Telescopes" and "Textile Chemistry." Several dozen biographical articles, plus a dozen essays (by Rosen and others) on such topics as "Laws: There Is Order in the World" broaden the potential audience to include general readers who are unwilling to tackle the dense equation- and formula-rich disquisitions that make up the bulk of this valuable survey. Small but unusually sharp photos, most in color and most being portraits or views of scientific gear, enhance the reasonable numbers of aptly placed tables, diagrams, and artists' renditions. Despite a severe case of "appendicitis" (there are 14, and there seems little point to most of them), this is well worth considering as a replacement for the earlier work, or as a more affordable (and current) substitute for the 18-volume Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology (Elsevier, 2001).—John Peters, New York Public Library
