Post-Colonial Literatures in English, together with English Literature and American Literature, form one of the three major groupings of literature in English, and, as such, are widely studied around the world. Their significance derives from the richness and variety of experience which they reflect. In two volumes, this Encyclopedia documents the history and development of this body of work and includes original research relating to the literatures of some 50 countries and territories. In more than 1,600 entries written by more than 600 internationally recognized scholars, it explores the effect of the colonial and post-colonial experience on literatures in English worldwide.

The Structure

The Encyclopedia is alphabetically organized and includes three major categories of survey: national entries, which trace the literary and cultural development of a country in terms of its geography, history, economy, and politics; major subject and genre entries, which provide a historic perspective on the trends and currents of literary activity in different countries; and biographical and critical entries on individual authors.

Special Features

* More than 50 countries and regions are covered in more than 1,600 entries by more than 600 scholars

* Led by a prestigious editorial board, a team of national and regional editors has identified and commissioned entries in each country/area

* The comparative nature of entries allows the literature of one country to be interpreted in relation to that of another

* Suggestions for further reading

* Clearly and incisively written to combine information, interpretation and comparison in language that is concise and jargon-free

* Comprehensive index to writers, subjects and works

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This encyclopedia loosely refers to writing affected by the process of colonization. Bangladesh, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Malta, and Sri Lanka are only a few of the countries included. While there are other works on individual countries and types of literature, such as the Oxford Companion to Canadian Theater (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1989) or the Reference Guide to Short Fiction (St. James, 1993), no major source compares regarding number of countries or areas of literature covered. Individual writers, national literary developments, and major genres that provide a cross-cultural view are all assessed. Entries on individuals include a short identifier, coverage of works, and biography, and for most a brief bibliography that makes further exploration of little-known authors easier. The entries on the national literary movements and the genres are lengthy and include a bibliography. All entries are signed. With the growing multicultural emphasis on literature, this work is a welcome and needed source. Highly recommended for all undergraduate collections.-Neal Wyatt, Mary Washington Coll. Lib., Fredericksburg, Va.
Library Journal
This three-volume revised edition updates the two-volume 1994 edition of the same title, the purpose being to facilitate the study of literature in English from the former colonies of Great Britain, excluding the United States. Those countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Pakistan, Jamaica, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Written and signed by over 700 contributors, the alphabetically arranged articles range in length from a bit less than a page (author entries) to several pages (country and thematic entries) and include references for further study. Many have been significantly updated, and some new ones have also been added, bringing the total to more than 1600. Also included are a contents list, a list of contributors, an introductory essay, and an exhaustive index in Volume 3. Bottom Line Since the first edition of this resource is included in Chadwyck-Healey's Literature Online Reference Edition, libraries subscribing to that database may want to check on whether the second edition will be added before purchasing this set. For libraries that own the first edition in book form, purchasing the second is optional. Academic libraries supporting graduate literature programs and those where the first edition was heavily used will probably want to purchase this new edition, as will academic libraries not owning the first edition.-Denise Johnson, Bradley Univ. Lib., Peoria, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
