Booknews
The nine-volume set attempts to provide basic information on all archaeologically known cultures according to "major traditions" (defined as commonality in subsistence practices, sociopolitical organization, and material industries). The set features three types of entries: major traditions, regional subtraditions, and sites. For this volume, South America is divided into four regions. Subtraditions are described in terms of environment, settlements, economy, sociopolitical organization, and religion and expressive culture. Andean populations, the book explains, rapidly evolved a mode of village life and political centralization while populations in the other three areas changed little after the introduction of agriculture. But then, the archaeological record for the Andes is greater than for the other areas. Most of the 22 contributors are US scholars. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
