Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
This is an essential guide not just to the collection, but to the biographies of artists, including many lesser-known figures as well as such giants of Russian stage design as Léon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, Natalia Goncharova or Alexandra Exter.

Library Journal

A companion to Bowlt's (Slavic languages & literatures, Univ. of Southern California) Masterpieces of Russian Stage Design, 1880–1930, this title is a thoroughly researched and heavily illustrated catalog of works in the collection of Nina and Nikita D. Lobanov-Rostovsky. Featuring over 1,200 entries, the book succeeds in showcasing the collection and Bowlt's extensive research; however, its organization—alphabetically by artist name—does little to highlight the history, evolution, and schools of design during this time period in Russia. While the previous volume in this series does expand on design history in this area, this title is of little use as a stand-alone. Only those who are well versed in the history of Russian art and design and already familiar with the major artists will benefit from Bowlt's work. More casual readers may enjoy the aforementioned Masterpieces. VERDICT Students, scholars, and collectors may find this work useful in an academic or art library setting, but the majority of public library users will gain little from it.—Jennifer Naimzadeh, Richland Lib., Columbia, SC
