Overview

From Jack the Ripper to the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP), the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers provides an exhaustive overview of what is undoubtedly the most macabre and fascinating branch of crime and modern criminology. More than 240 entries and 70 photographs detail individual cases of serial murder from ancient Rome to the present day, law enforcement agents and their techniques, the factors that contribute to the development of a serial killer, and how society chooses to deal with and punish these vicious criminals.

Son of Sam, Jack the Ripper, the Boston Strangler, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy are some of the famous figures profiled by Newton, a crime writer specializing in serial killers. Ranging from ancient Rome to the present, he discusses the realities versus popular film and television myths, key figures on both sides of the law, pivotal cases and events, and criminal activities that have shaped law enforcement responses. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION

I have read a few books similar to this one, where the authors try to list and briefly summarize every serial killer. No book however, comes this close to listing them all. I often find myself using this book to verify information, and rarely do I come across an individual not listed in it. The author put lots of research into this book, and even went so far as to list unsolved serial cases, which again was the most thorough listing I have ever seen. I highly recommend this book to those who want to learn more names in the world of serial killers. I also recommend this book to those researching in the area to use as a guidebook to look back upon when needed.
