A massive undertaking, this second edition is a milestone in the study of television. Following the format and scope of its 1997 predecessor, the work chronicles the development of television through 1000 essays by more than 250 contributors. Almost half of the entries from the first edition have been revised and 200 new essays have been added. Although the focus is on the development of U.S. television, a healthy number of entries relate to British and Canadian television, and country-specific entries give a nod to international issues. The first volume features an alphabetical listing of subjects, mostly shows or personalities. Bottom Line This accessible, multi-purpose source provides a fairly broad overview of a huge subject and will serve as a solid starting point for research; it may not be as useful to advanced researchers.
