For most people, vitamin C has generally been the natural substance of choice to stave off a cold. But did you know that the seeds of the arbus plant are used to treat fever, malaria and headache; that the dandelion may be eaten as a vegetable or made into a medicinal wine or tea; or that rosemary leaves are sometimes used in remedies for indigestion, arthritis and insomnia? To the many natural and synthetic substances available to treat so many different conditions and ailments, the Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements provides a comprehensive A-to-Z guide that includes more than 500 entries to help readers better identify and understand the substances that may affect their health. Written by two experts in the field, the Encyclopedia features information on what vitamins, minerals and supplements are and how they work in the body; the natural and synthetic sources of each substance; the myths and quackery surrounding some of the substances (e.g., is vitamin C really a cure for cancer?); nutritional analyses of diet, body-building and other special supplements; vitamins as a form of treatment for physical and mental diseases and disorders; and pioneers in the field and their theories of nutrition. In addition, the Encyclopedia includes a foreword written by a prominent attorney and teacher that provides the latest and most complete information on FDA operations and regulations and how they affect what nutritional supplements are made available to the public. The Encyclopedia is also enhanced by tables, charts and several appendices that supplement the text, including an explanation of the new food label, how certain drugs and nutrients interact, illnesses and injuries that are associated with the use of selected dietary supplements, a chronology highlighting advances in nutrition, and the complete text of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, making this volume indispensable to all who are concerned about maintaining and streng

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Registered nurse Navarra and Lipkowitz, an M.D. and former pharmacologist with training in nutrition, have compiled a resource that explains vitamins, minerals, and food supplements, including many medicinal herbs. Each substance entry briefly describes what the substance is, where it is found, and how it is used and gives its scientific and common name. Some health conditions, e.g., acne, cardiomyopathy, and macular degeneration, are also included, as are nutritional terms. The entries aim to provide "non-judgmental information on nutritional options." Negative effects and toxic amounts are noted, as are recommended daily allowances for vitamins and minerals, but herbal preparations and recommended dosages are not included. Extensive appendixes include the food pyramid, a glossary, a history of nutrition, and other worthwhile information. A good, interesting book packed with information.Janet M. Schneider, James A. YA-Over 500 alphabetically arranged entries about vitamins, minerals, food supplements, and other nutritional-related terms include basic facts, benefits, dosages, recommended daily allowance, dietary sources, adverse effects, etc. Appendixes include a food pyramid chart, a nutrition chronology, a drug and nutrient interactions chart, and "The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994." The key to using this book to its best advantage is the comprehensive index, although not all plants have scientific name entries. A solid reference guide to nutritional options, this title will be useful for students doing biological, nutritional, chemical, and sports-medicine research.-Rebecca C.
