Encyclopedia of Westerns

Overview

More westerns - the good, the bad, or the ugly - have been made than nearly any other type of movie. They include silent films, shorts, serials, film series, feature films, made-for-television movies, and other formats. As a result, few images are as familiar to audiences worldwide as those of gunfighters, bandanna-clad outlaws, or cowboys riding into a sunset. From rollicking musical adventures to historical epics to penetrating psychological explorations, the western has ranged farther than any other film genre...

From rollicking musical adventures to historical epics to penetrating psychological explorations, the western has ranged farther than any other film genre and, in the process, reaped millions of fans.

With more than 3,500 entries, The Encyclopedia of Westerns is a detailed and insightful survey of western films. Entries provide production details, cast and crew lists, and the release date of each film discussed, followed by a summary of the story and a critical analysis of the most significant movies covered. Also featured is an appendix listing spaghetti westerns (the genre that made Clint Eastwood a star), an overview of westerns at the Academy Awards, a look at literary sources and inspirations, and more than 100 photographs. For newcomers and longtime fans alike, The Encyclopedia of Westerns is a must-have guide to this exciting film genre.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The film Western receives a four-star treatment from Fagen (Stand Tall, Pilgrim: Remembering John Wayne and His Movies). Following a foreword by Tom Selleck and a preface by Dale Robertson, Fagen briefly traces the history of the genre, clearly defining purpose, methodology, and organization. The bulk of the book is made up of more than 3500 film entries, ranging from The Great Train Robbery (1902) to The Quick and the Dead (1995). Typically, entries include title, studio, year, running time, VHS/DVD availability, credits, and annotation (which may feature a plot synopsis, quotations, critical reaction, and personal comments by the author). Longer annotations yield a wealth of information, such as the revelation that most historians of the American West consider High Noon's portrayal of sheriff and citizens inaccurate. The appendixes list Italian spaghetti Westerns (which actually originated in Germany), Oscar nominees and winners, films based on literary sources, and additional silent and sound films. Fagen's knowledge of, and love for, his subject shine through every page of this unique and valuable work. The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: The Western provides similar coverage but does not include silent films. Suitable for scholar and fan alike in both public and academic libraries.-M.C.
