Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Supplementing the four-volume reference published in 1984, Volume 5 includes a complete index to the entire set as well as some 400 signed bio-critical essays on some of the world's most influential contemporary authors. Each essay includes a photograph of the author and concludes with a listing of further works and a concise secondary bibliography of published works in English, German, French. and Spanish. Additional articles survey the countries with developed literatures in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, while topical articles address recent literary scholarship, including deconstruction, feminist criticism, historicism, literature and exile, postmodernism, and poststructuralism. Sandy Whiteley
The four-volume "Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century", published between 1982 and 1984 by Frederick Ungar, contained more than 1,700 entries, most of them biographies. Volume 5 updates this set with biographies of poets, dramatists, and novelists from many nations. Some of these writers have come to international prominence only recently (August Wilson, Salman Rushdie), but others are well-known writers (John le Carre, N. Scott Momaday) who, for one reason or another, were left out of the earlier volumes. In addition, there are 35 national-survey articles, ranging from Algerian to Vietnamese literature, and six new topical articles on such recent literary trends as deconstruction, feminist criticism, and postmodernism. Every entry concludes with a bibliography, and there are black-and-white portraits of some authors. The cumulative index covers all five volumes. Subject headings for nationalities appear, so it is possible to find, for instance, all the Japanese writers in the set Libraries that have found the "Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century" useful will want to add volume 5, especially for its coverage of non-Western authors who are difficult to find elsewhere.
