In The End of Food, organic farmer and investigative science journalist Pawlick compiles research conducted outside of North America that focuses on the modified and reduced nutritional value of food. The North American diet of greenhouse fruits and vegetables is, he writes, nutritionally poisonous. Pawlick does not see the end of the healthy North American as inevitable-a final chapter contains an annotated bibliography on gardening and small farms, sustainable agriculture, and expos s in the agricultural industry as well as a list of organizations and citizens' groups. Whereas Pawlick focuses on the nutritional content missing from our food, investigative journalist Fitzgerald addresses the toxic chemicals building up in our food, water, and environment. In 1906, Congress enacted the Pure Foods and Drugs Act. From that day forward, U.S. citizens have trusted that all foods and medicine would be closely monitored for safety.     Favorable review: enlightening. "Horticultural Horrors and "Fantasy" Foods, You Decide the Future. "Efficient" mass production, not flavor or nutritional value, decides which varieties survive. - This is a quote from the book, The End of Food, with author Thomas F. Pawlick and this quote is in reference to the fruits and vegetables that are chosen for planting to be produced for consumers. Mr. Pawlick gives his readers an in-depth account of how our food supply is determined, that is what foods will be grown or "manufactured" for consumer consumption. How safe is our food supply? What fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides are being sprayed on our food? What is the nutritional value of our food? Has the nutritional value of our food increased or decreased over the last 50 to 60 years? Many questions such as these are addressed in this book. A great wealth of knowledge and information are provided along with evidence to support the thoughts of the author. *Insightful. *Informative. *An eye-opener. *A reminder of information you may have read in other printed media. **Think about this, are we being given fresh, raw, flavorless, tasteless, lower vitamin & mineral fruits & vegetables to "enjoy" on our plates? *Just something to ponder.
