Many books have predicted the demise of heavy-handed, hierarchy-oriented management structures; this book is one of the few to both provide a compelling discussion of why the traditional command-and-control paradigm can't survive and to offer an alternative model for today's leaders. The authors begin with a consideration of how conventional systems work as a kind of "one-dimensional sieve through which three-dimensional people and ideas are strained." After being forced through this metaphorical sieve, the reduced human being that remains can only bring reduced faculties -- an inauthentic engagement, a diminished imagination -- to the act of working. In contrast to this one-dimensional mode of being, the authors propose a view of the workplace as a potential web of living and evolving relationships in which training and development, the virtues nominally honored in an hierarchal scheme, can truly be said to take place. Although this view may sound facile on the surface, there is a great deal of depth and passion in the argument, ultimately making The End of Management an extraordinary book.

Kenneth Cloke is director of the Center for Dispute Resolution and a mediator, arbitrator, consultant, and trainer.

Joan Goldsmith is an organizational consultant and educator specializing in leadership development and organizational change.

Cloke and Goldsmith draw on more than thirty years of practical experience in organizational consulting with hundreds of organizations in the United States and internationally, from Fortune 500 companies to government agencies, schools, and nonprofits. They are coauthors of four previous books, including Resolving Conflicts at Work (Jossey-Bass, 2000).
