Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
When something is called extinct it is either known to have died out or has not been seen in the wild for 50 years or more. Scientists have come up with words to describe animals that no longer exist or are in danger of disappearing. An insert defines each term and provides examples of animal in several of the categories. Baby animals are at high risk because they are usually small and unable to care for themselves. Among those endangered are the elephants who suffer from loss of habitat as well as poachers who want their tusks. When the mother elephant dies, the baby often cannot survive on its own. Primates are also endangered; especially orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas due to loss of habitat and the risk of being captured and sold as pets. Lemurs are primates called prosimians and most of them live in Madagascar. They are also suffering from loss of habitat and attacks from predators. (This reviewer had the pleasure of actually seeing and feeding a lemur on a preserve in Madagascar.) They, like the other animals in this book—pandas, Sumatran tigers, amurs leopards, lions, cheetahs, polar bears, and African penguins—all need human help to prevent the species from becoming extinct. Actions like those taken in Cape Town where a penguin reserve has been established right in the town are positive examples of what people can do. Although just two breeding pairs existed in 1982, the penguin colony has since grown to 2,200. This is partly due to a reduction in commercial trawling which has increased the supply fish which constitute the penguin's diet. Other suggestions for helping animals are presented on the ending pages along with a map that shows where some of the endangered animals identified in this book live. The full color illustrations are excellent and bring the points home. All in all, a good addition for any school, home or public library. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
