Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
NSTA Recommends

Kingfisher Knowledge: Endangered Planet offers a positive vision of the future. The book's emphasis on the interconnectedness of all life on Earth will help students appreciate their responsibilities toward the planet. . . . This could be a good springboard for cross-campus, cross-curricular “real-life” units of study.

Children's Literature
Even though this book is as informative as a textbook, it draws young readers with its colorful images and simply organized text. The reader will learn theories of why Earth may be endangered, including how its inhabitants from insects to mammals have adapted through genetic changes and how some creatures have not been able to cope. Readers will also learn that Earth is the only the planet with life because of such characteristics as being the right distance from the sun. Many of the researched facts are sure to surprise readers, including the idea that the more we have advanced, the more it has endangered our planet. Do we need to stop and think about what our future holds before we go beyond our means and limit our ability to enhance and ensure life for generations to come? Author David Burnie put a lot of thought into how to divide this book and showed foresight in writing summaries followed by more detailed chapters. The use of vibrant photos with captions and informative graphs and charts makes the more difficult information easier to understand and utilize for future papers. The “Go Further” sections at the end of each chapter are a definite asset to the book, defining the terms included in the chapter and giving outsides sources for further research, including websites. Look for other titles from the “Kingfisher Knowledge” series. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
