Description: This is a guide to help nurse managers in particular and other nurses in general understand horizontal hostility, why it occurs in nursing, and how it can be remedied.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss and describe horizontal hostility in the nursing profession and to provide readers with the tools to stop it.
Audience: This book is aimed at nurses in management and leadership positions but would also be appropriate for every nurse and nursing student. The author is especially concerned about new nurses, stating that 60 percent of new nurses leave their first positions within six months because of horizontal hostility.
Features: The book begins with learning objectives and consists of eight chapters divided into two sections. The sections cover understanding the forces and best practices to eliminate horizontal hostility. Each chapter is filled with vignettes from the author's own practice as well as stories and quotes from other nurses who have experienced this problem. The book also includes an instructional guide, exam, and evaluation form. When completed, they can be submitted for continuing education credits accredited by ANCC.
Assessment: "This is a very easy read with much practical information to help nurses understand, prevent, and/or deal with horizontal hostility in their working environments. The vignettes and stories really tell it like it is and they aren't pretty. It is good to get this very prevalent problem out in the open, and as E. Goehner, PhD, RN, CPHQ, states on the book's back cover, "Until we (nurses) are willing to name what we've all experienced, nothing will change." The book, at under 200 pages of text, is quite pricey, but it is really one of a kind.
