Overview

The appearance of the warp drive from the long lost Fenrir spaceship triggers an epic quest for Captain Mikhail Volkov. According to the drive's computers, Fenrir had been lost to hypothetical “nowhere” of subspace, but with the drive's housing covered with coral and sea life, obviously Fenrir has gone somewhere. Faced with genocide at the hands of the alien Nefrim, humans need a miracle to survive. On the chance that Fenrir's mysterious location holds such a miracle, Mikhail jumps into the unknown and crashes into the endless blue of the Sargasso Sea.

Every ship that misjumped from any race that discovered travel through subspace has crashed into its waters, creating a graveyard of rusting spaceships. On the Sargasso's great oceans, humans live alongside aliens in uneasy peace.

His ship damaged, his younger foster brother lost, and his sanity rattled, Mikhail discovers a secret that might save the human race—but only if he can repair his ship and return home.

    A Great Effort!

I have read some of Mz. Spencer's books and not liked any of them entirely, though parts were great. I was to the point I wasn't sure I would read more. I'm glad I changed my mind. This story is based on an intriquing concerpt. The characters are well drawn and don't drop out of character ever '!'. The story is suspenseful and the ending appropriate. For me, the characters are 'fuller' mentally, physically and spiritually than one normally sees. I think Mz. Spencer has hit her stride and, if we are lucky, we may see some more really entertaining and satisfying books. I felt this enthusiastic when I read The Luck of Brin's Five, the first of Cherry Whilder's great Torin series Sherry Tepper's Awakeners which led to The Gate to Women's Country and Grass Ursula Leguin's The Dispossessed followed by lots of great books Jack Vance's Araminta Station and the rest of the Cadwal Chronicles and Lois McMaster Bujold's Memories through the Chalion Series. Thank you, Mz. Spencer!

This is a superb outer space thriller

The Earthlings know that the Nefrim have one objective: to drive them out of space. Thus spaceships have a tendency to vanish without ever coming back most people assume the hostile Nefrim is behind these assaults. The Nefrim likewise blame the newcomers for their missing ships.--------------- Thus when the vanished Fenrir's warp drive suddenly surfaces at Plymouth Station, no one knows what to make of it as there is no precedent. Captain Mikhail Volkov leads the official inquiry into uncovering what happened from the moment the vessel disappeared during acceleration until the reappearance. He decides the best way to learn the truth is jump to the last coordinates the Fenrir¿s warp drive displays. He never expected to find himself and his crew in the middle of the oceanic Sargasso universe where no one has ever returned.-------------------- This is a superb outer space thriller because Wen Spencer makes the Sargasso sector seem genuine as stranded humans and aliens live in discord. Mikhail is a terrific hero as he and his brother struggle from one disaster into another while beginning to comprehend the real scope of their mission. Failure means the end of at least one universe and probably two.---------- Harriet Klausner
