Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Robert M Stern, MA (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This book gives a basic physiological description of the key components of the endocrine and reproductive systems as well as clinically useful descriptions of diseases that affect each system.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a basic background in the physiology of the endocrine and reproductive systems in order to understand diseases that affect these systems. These objectives are excellent for students seeking to gain a basic knowledge of these systems as part of college or medical school training.
Audience: Although the authors do not directly state their intended audience, the book is ideal for first-year medical students learning physiology or college students in a physiology class.
Features: The book focuses on each of the major systems within the endocrine and reproductive systems, providing a comprehensive discussion of the underlying physiology of each component within the system. The discussion is nicely supplemented with pictures and diagrams to aid in comprehension. Particularly innovative and useful are the clinical correlations in each section that tie together basic physiology and pathophysiology.
Assessment: This is the only comprehensive book I have read in this field. In comparison to the broader physiology textbooks that include discussions of these systems, this one is clear and easy to read. It also provides just the right amount of clinical correlation for college students or first-year medical students.
