Description: This book demonstrates the current status of surgical care in endocrine surgery.
Purpose: The purpose is to create a comprehensive book that emphasizes practical approaches to endocrine surgery.
Audience: Physicians interested in endocrine surgery, including students and residents, are the audience.
Features: This book is divided into nine sections and has a total of 55 chapters and 700 pages. It covers all the major endocrine organs and includes the GI tract and the neuroendocrine lung as well as the endocrine aspects of advanced malignancies. The general structure of the chapters includes a section on general considerations about a disease or organ, the syndromes associated with the specific abnormalities encountered in both history exam and diagnostic studies. There are numerous color images and photographs with tables and diagrams describing operative procedures. At the end of each chapter is a long list of references related to the topic under discussion.
Assessment: This book is an outstanding contribution to endocrine surgery. It clearly emphasizes practical approaches to problem solving and presents logical differences of opinions and controversies in this difficult area. New diagnostic procedures are discussed and the current operative technique for each procedure is discussed. A wide range of approaches including endoscopic, laparoscopic, and open, are presented. The detailed discussion of hormone assays including intraoperative assays is very useful. The book also goes into some detail about the minimally invasive and robotic approach to endocrine surgery, which is a new evolving area of this specialty and is needed in an excellent book. The color images are outstanding and allow one to see pathologic and operative detail in a very useful way. In addition, there is a nice blend of the pathologic analysis along with diagnostic and treatment modalities. This gives a broad picture of the care and treatment of the disease as a continuum. This book is well written and the information is constructed in a useful way that gives a depth of knowledge to the reader in the particular area of interest. I would recommend this book highly.
