Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Donna L. Phillips
In this final book of Jones's Need series, half-human, half-pixie Zara returns to Bedford, Maine, after rescuing shapeshifter boyfriend/wolf, Nick, from Valhalla. He cannot accept, however, that Zara is half pixie. Think "pixie" not as wee people in green, but blue-skinned warriors with exceptional strength and keen senses. Some are led by evil king Frank and equally evil Isla, mother of Zara's new love interest, pixie King Astley. With Zara now his queen, Astley is determined to save humanity from Ragnarok with the help of Bedford High's student body, a few good pixies, and three capable adults. Best friend Issie, geeky Devyn, and his parents are back, as is Grandma Betty as the competent and salty-talking weretiger. All are eager to "kick ass" on the bad pixies. First, though, Zara must descend into Norse mythology's Hel to take care of unfinished business. Teens who love to hang out with the gods will enjoy Endure's action, romance, sporadic gore, and surprises. Those who missed the three earlier books should jump into the story satisfactorily, as Jones does a respectable job of catching up first-time readers with the plot. Those who expect a bit more will find it in Zara's fresh voice as she converses with Hel and Loki in her quest to understand the gods and their motives. For a young woman not yet out of her teens, she manages to ask provocative questions in a way that will resonate for other teens who wonder with her. Reviewer: Donna L. Phillips
Children's Literature - Jackie Fulton
In the fourth and final installment of the "Need" series, Zara's life seems to be turned upside-down. Grandma has not reappeared since she turned into a tiger. Zara's werewolf boyfriend Nick will barely even speak to her since she became a pixie queen. Once pacifist Zara must now come to grips with becoming a warrior in a violent pixie apocalypse against her pixie king's evil mother. Then, just to make matters worse, Hel personally comes looking for Zara. The dystopian combination of Norse mythology, were-creatures, and human-sized evil pixies make the story line difficult to follow without having read the previous three installments. Teen readers, especially those who relish the recent vampire and mythology craze will find a little of both in this book. The attempt to integrate teen-friendly technology such as texting, blogging and web surfing places the book in the present or near future but feels clumsy. What does one do immediately following an epic battle with a Norse goddess? Send a mass text, of course. Likewise, each chapter begins with a police bulletin or blog excerpt that feels completely disjointed from the rest of the book. Reviewer: Jackie Fulton

Endure. is. FANTASTIC! This is by far the best book of the series. Jones' writing has grown right along with her characters. Everything is done perfectly. I could not put this book down! It's intense, emotional, suspenseful, and action-packed. Endure is a thrill-ride that you cannot miss. Zara grows so much as a character in this novel. She really becomes comfortable with her pixie half, and I was glad that she did. Also, she's sad about Nick's rejection, that was touched on in the last novel, but she's not completely shattered. She knows that's not the most important thing in the world. That is an extremely refreshing outlook from a YA heroine. It made me like Zara and this series that much more. Astley was wonderful, and I loved him a billion times more in this book than I did in the last one. He is just terrific. Nick got on my nerves again. When he was told how bratty he was, I wholeheartedly agreed. The character development and growth throughout this series has been amazing. I've really enjoyed getting to know these characters and all of their quirks. The plot is intense, and the pacing is perfect. There is a lot of action, and the romance gets complicated, builds, and changes throughout the course of the novel. I read this book all in one sitting because I had to know whether or not Zara and company were able to save the world. Were they able to, you ask? Well you'll have to pick up the book and find out. In an effort not to spoil anything, I'm going to keep this part of my review kind of vague. There are new creatures introduced, as well as new dimensions/worlds/whatever you want to call them. Things get a whole lot more complicated. People die. There is a lot going on. Things get ugly. You'll be gripping your book/e-reader so hard by the end of this novel that you'll have lost feeling in your hands. It'll all be worth it, though. Overall, I'd recommend this book and this series to anyone. Jones offers a unique twist on pixies and incorporates a lot of Norse mythology, which I like. All of the books are super quick reads, and they just get better as the series progresses. Endure is one of the best books I've read so far this year. Well done, Carrie, well done.

First of all... awesome book! Second of all ok well after zara gets nick back from vallhala nick hates her because shes a pixie. She has more feelings for Astley btw astley seems so hot im on team asley all the way except for one part where astley was pretending to be evil... it turns out that he was just pretends to join forces with zara... earlier in the book astley crazy ass mother kidnapps zara, astley, and issie and then his crazy ass mom kisses zara and turns her back into a human. After zara turns back human nick wants her back but zara turns him down because astley lives her whether or not she is a pixie. Astley says he doesnt want to turn zara back into a pixie because there is a possibility of her dying and he loves her too much to take a risk. But astley can still make out with zara because he can control whether or not he wants to turn her and also even though zaras human, her and astley still have some sort of connection and their branches are still entwined. So frank starts and apocalpse. As hes causing the apocalpse astley kills him with a sword but its too late and the only way to stop the apocalpse is if zara sacrifices herself and throws her self into that crater thats gonna swallow the earth. Even though astley is devasted to lose zara, he agrees to pixie kiss zara right before she throws herself in the crater . Its kind of like a goodbye kiss. The gods let zara stay on earth as a reward for sacraficing her self. So in the end zara turns back into a pixie. She is still astleys queen. And her and nick are OVER but there still friends. Btw, betty comes back after running off, devyn and issie are still together, somewhat near the end zara gets to see her stepdad and her biological pixie father. She loves both of them and is happy to get a chance to say one last goodbye to them. And they all live happy lives. Im happy that astley turns out to be zaras true soul mate. GO TEAM ASTLEY! ;)

Endure is the last and final book in the Need Series by Carrie Jones and let me tell you it's been a blast reading this series. The plot and characters were done so well throughout the entire series with tons of twists and turns and compelling characters that made it worthwhile for the time I invested into reading the series. Okay now on to the actual book and the review. Nick has been brought back from Valhalla thanks to Zara, and instead of being grateful the guy is acting like a complete jerk towards her. Meanwhile Zara is developing deeper feelings for Astley which I was all for it. Also Zara and her friends are still trying to stop the apocalypse from happening and this brings on quite a few adventures and hardships for the characters especially Zara who is the key to whether the apocalypse will happen or not happen. I applaud the growth Zara's character has gone through in the series. She was willing to put all her personal life issues aside and concentrate on trying to save the world. She steps up and becomes a true leader in Endure. And she isn't the only character who I saw growth in, pretty much all of them had grown in their own ways. The only one that got on my nerves was Nick he was such a brat. As far as the romance goes I was very happy with who Zara ended up with. She couldn't have picked a better guy. I was very satisfied with the wrap up of the series. Endure was fast paced without a dull moment in sight and if you haven't read the series go pick it up, every book was an incredibly fast read for me.

I love this series. A very original plot and very well written. It was very easy to just slip into Zara's perspective. The ending was satisfying to the main plot, but the romantic sub-plot didn't seem resolved. There was no clear, definite decision made. I was looking forward to this after the climax. The falling action fell a little flat. I still love this series. Zara is a very likable character and so are her friends. Another thing I noticed was that in this last book, the other characters are not as involved. It is mainly about Zara and her battles.

I enjoyed this series.I like Jones's writing style and her characters were spot on. It really comes down to the interaction between the characters with this series and Jones seemed to nail the dialogue. Izzy is such a hilarious person and between Izzy and Zara, they both seem to bring out the funny in eachother. it was equal parts creepy, scary and romantic. All good things in a book. I don't want to risk a spoiler, but I will say that I was a bit suprised at who Zara ended up with and the fact that the guy she didn't choose just kinda walked out of the picture. I felt like there should have been more of a conflict there, but there was a lot going on in this final book with fighting the bad pixies. It was a good series and i really enjoyed reading it.

Amazing Finale!! i was under-impressed with the second book and very excited to see how this one would turn out. I have to say I LOVED IT! you really saw how Zara finally grew into the person she was always meant to be. she had to make some tough choices (of which i approved) and did what was right. she didnt do stupid girly things for a boy, like many heroines nowadays do. she was strong and wonderful, a perfect rolemodel for young girls! (im also a big fan of which boy she choices :) but i wont spoil that!) i thought out of all the books, this was by far the best!

I found that this book went much faster and felt much better than the 2nd and 3rd books. I enjoyed the inclusion of Hel in the store line. The development of the characters finally reached a climax and it made sense. The love story twist was to be expected but I liked how she did it. She showed the change and that made it seem more real and likely. I really enjoyed the ending of this series with this book.

I read this series almost non stop over four days. This book is the best in the series. The conflicts, character development, and even new characters are awesome in this book. I most especially loved the changes in Zara, the main character. I definitely recommend that you read the series from the beginning, since each book builds upon the previous book(s).
