When the abused decide to fight back, the abuser's world might just shatter.

Lauren Covington's family maintains a grand facade that belies the life they live behind closed doors. Alex Covington, Lauren's father, keeps a tight rein on his family through dominance, abuse, and obsessive control. Consequently, Lauren doesn't believe she could ever trust a man, much less fall in love with one.

When Lauren meets Jesse Ryder, her carefully constructed protective wall shatters. She falls hopelessly and completely in love. It's only fitting that Jesse is a private detective who had once worked for her father, had defied him, and was now the subject of Alex Covington's wrath.

Amidst devastating loss, betrayal, and her father's destructive pursuit of Jesse, Lauren finds the trust and love she had always longed for.

This review I had to think about. I' m not really sure what to rate this book. I liked the story for the most part. A bit slow in areas, very repetitive, and too much side stuff added in. So the main character is Laura Covington. She is in her 20s, has a good job, and lives with her parents and younger brother. She appears to everyone (even her best friends) to have the perfect life and family. When she mets Jesse in a bar and falls for him, the perfect image she portrays shatters. Jesse knows Laura's father, has worked for him, and knows the real Alex Covington. Not the image the rest of the world is shown. After 20 years of hiding the truth and watching the abuse in her house, both mental and physical: she decides it's time for a change. With Jesse's help of course.

Wow, what a very intense book about a very touchy subject, abuse along with having some romance thrown in. An abusive Husband Alex trying to control his family so his job as a lawyer and public figure isn't tarnish. Alex does his best to try and control his family but his daughter Lauren meets a guy named Jesse who did a couple of jobs for Alex but then turned him down and told him no on the next one. Lauren and Jesse start dating while Alex is trying to get rid of Jesse because he knows too much about how he "runs" things. We find out in the end if Lauren & Jesse are together or if Alex wins out.

An engrossing thriller that maintains a steady balance of plot and character. It focuses on the emotions of the leads to drive the story, without sacrificing the pacing, and offers plenty of twists that feel natural.

I don't know where to start on this. I really did try to like it but there was so many frustrating parts in there for me. What I like: 1)It's about a big problem that some people experience - physical and mental abuse. 2)There was some strong characters in the book. What I didn't like: 1)The book was too slow for me. It could have been condensed to have all the action one right after the other. 2)The whole issue with her friend. Personally I could have done without that, the book itself was tackling a bigger issue and this is one of the frustrating parts for me. 3)There was so many times that the issue with her father could have been resolved just with a recording device. Don't trust my judgement because other people obviously loved the book.

I can not figure out how this book has such high reviews. It starts so agonizingly slow. The story is so unrealistic, a grown ass woman allowing daddy to control everything in her life while she is living at home and attending Harvard. All the while she is letting her dad beat hee mother and no one knows, not even her best friends. I just hates this story and her style of writing. I would definitely pass this book up, and I have hundreds of ebooks that I have never felt The need to write a bad review for. that alone should say something. Beats the hell out of me.how these people could rate this poorly written book at 5!

just finished this book...great plot with lots of twists, I felt the ending, though surprising, was a bit rushed but was overall a good ending the characters were well written and the story was sad, funny, and emotional. This book def takes the reader through the gauntlet of emotions from sad to angry to bitter and to peace and happiness. def would recommend reading it.

When the abused decide to fight back, the abuser's world might just shatter. Lauren Covington's family maintains a grand facade that hides the private abuse they suffer at the hands of her father. Jesse Ryder, a private detective, steps into that world and, in the process, falls in love with Lauren. Together, Lauren and Jesse dodge death and expose the truth behind the facade. Not sure what I was expecting but this book really took me by surprise and I liked it! The basic storyline takes you through a period of time in Lauren's life, from the time that she meets Jesse and falls in love through the potential exposure and jailing of her father Alex, a long time abuser. You read about all of the fallout from Alex's domineering and powerful life and how it affects those around him. The story is at times jolting, hard to stomach, tender and loving, angering, and emotional. Darcia Helle does a very good job describing each character's feelings and thoughts. She does it in such a way that you can really see where their decisions and choices come from and what their desired end result is. You are able to follow along and stay in the scenes with the characters, riding the various waves of emotion with them. It was not pre-fab. There were many times when I wondered how the character was going to get out of a certain situation or what they would choose to do next. Jesse is a stalwart and upright guy who provides the love and unconditional acceptance that empowers Lauren. She can, in turn then provide that for others in her life. They are both good example of how to turn something bad around to be something good. I loved them both. The book is pretty clean and the sex is very discrete. While the abuse rendered by Alex is at times disturbing, it is a good work of fiction. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance and fictional thrillers. Four stars****

I could not put this book down! It was incredible! The characters were very well developed. The story was powerful, yet completely believable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. The subject matter can be a bit intense and hard to read at times, but it's definitely worth it!

The story line was good, although it moved slow. I would have liked the characters to have been stronger whereas the abuse was too frequent and overlooked. Alex was the true definition of the boogie man.

Oh how this book took me by surprise. From the cover alone one would expect a lustful wild ride, but then I read the description and found myself intrigued. From the start this story reveals a mystery thriller with a romance twist. It was nothing that I was anticipated from cover or description, but it offered such a sweet surprise. I really liked this story of the good vs. evil. It was the ultimate battle that leaves readers praying good will finds a thread of chance to prevail. My heart took one hell of a beating through this novel. I was overcome with emotion as the story uncovers more and more about Lauren's terrible and despicable father. As the story drags you deeper and deeper into its world readers will find themselves reevaluating their own characters for the boundaries of right and wrong. Darcia is one author not afraid to blatantly shock readers with the reality of her villains’ evil character. I was astounded by the levels to which she will catapult readers into the unknown showing the truly evil character in all his glory. I experienced a whole new level of hopelessness with this novel as the characters begin running out of resources. This was an impressive display of talent from this author that has me curious to check out her other titles. This is perfect for mystery lovers that are craving a dark and twisted read. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer JO~

This is the story of Alex Covington and his family. Alex is the type of person that wants to be in control at all times with everyone. He is #1 in his book and no one even comes close to being up to his standards. Alex wants Jesse Ryder to work for him, but Jesse doesn’t like the job and refuses. Alex doesn’t like being refused. When Jesse starts dating Alex’s daughter, Lauren, Alex doesn’t like it and tries to force Lauren to stop seeing him. Lauren doesn’t want to stop seeing Jesse, but the more they see each other the more Alex tries to get rid of Jesse by any means necessary. This was a great story of cat and mouse. The more Alex tries to get rid of Jesse the more Jesse digs into Alex’s affairs. Alex is into many illegal things and doesn’t want Jesse looking into his business. Jesse has trouble trying to stay ahead of Alex because his brain is floating around in love with Lauren. It seems like whenever he lets his guard down, one of Alex’s thugs thumps on him, stabs him, or takes a shot at him. The author made all the characters realistic and put in enough twists and turns to keep me reading well into the night. The abuse suffered by the family was also well thought out and handled in such a way by the author to make it believable without going into too much detail. The romance wasn’t overly sappy or overly detailed, so I didn’t feel the need to gag on the sweetness or smoke a cigarette when I was done reading. This story was like the perfect mocha.

I've read two or three of Darcia Helle's other novels and also several short stories by her. I've enjoyed every one. "Enemies and Playmates" is no exception. The characters are very well crafted. I was particularly impressed with the way the writer uses such things as clothing and snippets of lyrics to give more depth. I identified with one of the lead characters, Jesse, very much. Nearly every character has depth, and I enjoyed getting to know them. The mental struggles of nearly every major character are quite evident, and there were a several interesting twists. This is an interesting story with a fast-moving plot. It is a dark story, but I felt resolution with the ending. It's a very well written book, and I recommend it a lot. I'd also recommend reading beyond the end of the story to a short explanation of how song lyrics helped craft of of the characters. I found it to be an interesting glimpse into the writing process. This one is worth reading!
