Overview

An intergalactic cold war-and some heated passion- from an inventive new voice in futuristic romance.

After a stint in an alien prison, Captain Ari Rose wonders why she even bothered to survive. Stripped of her command and banished to her father's scientific expedition to finish a Ph.D. she doesn't want, Ari never planned to languish quietly behind a desk. She wasn't built for it, either. But when pirates commandeer her father's ship, Ari once again becomes a prisoner.

As far as pirate leader Cullin is concerned, Ari's past imprisonment puts her dead center in Cullin's sights. If she hasn't been brainwashed and returned as a spy, then he's convinced she must be part of a traitorous alliance endangering billions of lives. Cullin can't afford the desire she fires within him and he'll stop at nothing, including destroying her, to uncover the truth.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Political intrigue, titled aristocrats, duels, xenobiology, and starship captains feature in Burnard's over-the-top SF romance debut. Capt. Ari Idylle lost her command after being imprisoned, tortured, and inexplicably released by the alien Chekydran. When a small band of men seizes her father's ship while it's engaged in a scientific expedition, Ari butts heads with the band's captain, Cullin Seaghdh, who proves uncannily capable of manipulating her. Ari finds Cullin both arrogant and attractive as they work together to evade a Chekydran ship hot on their trail, but when Ari learns that her former commanders have placed a remote-controlled bomb in her head, she no longer knows who to trust. The ending is marred by a grotesque scene of sexualized violence, but readers will love the powerful emotion and futuristic costume-drama trappings. (Nov.)

    hmmm....

Plenty of world building but I was never able to bridge the gap and relate to characters. Surprised that it made the RITA list this year.

Wow! When does the movie come out?!

Just finished Enemy Within. Can't wait for the sequel. I hear the second book in the series is due out soon, but it can't come soon enough. I'm hoping to see more of the compelling characters introduced in this book. Love the new romance/sci-fi format introduced by Marcella. I couldn't put the book down. I was so enthralled by it, my husband is reading it now. Highly recommend this as a quick read that will keep you turning the pages anxious to see what happens next.

    A Major Good Read!

This novel grabs the reader from the first sentence, is difficult to put down before finishing, and leaves one wanting more when it ends. (Thank goodness another installment of the adventures of the intrepid Ari is coming out in May!) The plot moves along smoothly and is filled with twists that keep the reader thinking while the characters, especially Captain Alexandria (Ari) Rose, are well developed and engage the reader emotionally. This is Sci-Fi at its best with romance included, and the narrative demonstrates that even people shattered by the most horrible of situations can overcome the damage inflicted and come out with their basic goodness intact. There are books that engage the reader and others that have an optimistic message about human nature, but only exceptional books do both. This is the first work of an author who is going to be a force in the field of futuristic romance.

This is a terrific romantic science fiction thriller

The Chekydran capture Captain Alexandria "Ari" Idylle and torture her. Amazingly they not only fail to kill her, but they release her. She returns home, but not to a hero's welcome; as everyone she knows and some in the shadows she does not know assume the enemy tinkered with her brain. Even her loved ones believe the Chekydran played with her mind and therefore feel unsafe near her. She realizes her military career is dead as her superiors assume she has been brainwashed and thus a security risk.

She is forced to remain on her father's science ship as a sort of escape from the distrustful looks. However pirates led by Captain Cullin Seaghdh take over the vessel. However, she suspects there is more to the pirate than simple looting especially as they flee a Chekydran assault ship. In fact, he stalks her like others including her former military superiors who implanted a bomb in her head that can be detonated from a distance. Though attracted to him, she knows not trust no one.

This is a terrific romantic science fiction thriller that brings to life hostilities between two races fighting to dominate the galaxy with each side using nefarious tricks and willing to sacrifice loyal citizens to gain a check in the Outer Space game of chess that seems about to turn uglier. Although the climax contains repugnant sexual abuse that readers will insist is worse than to chewing on a Nurellan lemon berry, sub-genre fans will enjoy this strong space saga, which reminds the audience of the dirty tricks of the Cold War.
