Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This nonfiction text in the "Fundamental Physics" series first explores definitions of energy and matter followed by chapters concerning the forms, sources, storage, transfer, and saving of energy. A short introduction explains what the reader will learn and tells about the blue feature boxes that appear throughout the book. The "Did You Know?" boxes contain interesting related facts, "Test Yourself" has questions about what was read, "Investigate" has experiments that can be done at home, and "Time Travel" tells of discoveries from the past and developments which may affect science in the future. Answers to the "Test Yourself" and "Investigate" features, an index, and a glossary are included at the end of the text. Words that are highlighted in bold print throughout the text are found in the glossary. Lots of interesting photographs, graphs, timelines, and illustrations highlight and clarify the concepts. A photo of a lizard shows how the lizard uses the energy of sun to warm itself, and a photo of a fireworks display on the next page illustrates how the chemical energy in fireworks is released as kinetic, heat, sound, and light energy. The text is written in a logical sequence that is presented in a manner simple to read and understand, and is a good source for research purposes.
