Gr 8 Up After briefly outlining what has brought about the energy crisis, Fogel describes the strategies that are available for dealing with it, concentrating on alternative energy sources, such as natural gas, coal, synfuels, nuclear energy and solar energy. The author pays special attention to the government's role in the promotion of these various energy sources, through direct research and regulatory stances. Fogel also covers the conservation activities that are taking place or which could take place, describing individual, industrial and governmental actions. She stresses that there are energy choices and that the policies that are established by the government will affect those choices. Fogel concludes with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the two general approaches to U.S. energy policy, the free market approach and the planning approach. This book is a thoughtful, balanced, up-to-date examination of one of the major problems facing this country. Although there are numerous books available on energy and the future, the emphasis on energy policy makes this book a welcome addition.
