Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amalia Selle
In raising of the next generation, we share a responsibility to educate children about the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. Questions surrounding alternative energy sources loom in our future. This "Saving Our World" book about energy conservation discusses renewable and nonrenewable resources, alternative fuels, and saving energy in the home. It focuses on many simple ways children can learn to save energy. The question time boxes provide further information. The eye-opener boxes provide interesting, and sometimes shocking, facts such as how insulating a hot water heater will conserve energy because it keeps the water heated for longer. This graphically pleasing, nonfiction book could easily be used as further enrichment to back up a science textbook. While certainly not a text dense science book, it contains advanced terms such as green house gases, emissions, fossil fuels, ethanol, hydrogen fuel cells, and turbines. Whether used to review material or to expose children to issues facing our environment, this series would be a valuable addition to any classroom or personal library. The readable text, pictures, maps, index, and glossary make it accessible to various reading and interest levels. Reviewer: Amalia Selle
